In fact, the shortage is said to be 600,000 skilled jobs across the United States. The manufacturing technician in today's workforce needs to be highly skilled and technology savy to be successful. The Bluegrass Community and Technical College Advanced Manufacturing Center located in Georgetown offers many advantages for students looking for a challenging and rewarding career including a work/study program, the Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) Program, with local manufacturers such as the Toyota.
The faculty and staff at AMC beleive it is important to approach learning as a partnership that includes students, industry and the community college. The ultimate goal is a highly qualified multiskilled worker that can go from the classroom to the workforce with only company specific activities to learn. In order to to this, we work with industry to determine the knowledge and skills needed for their workforce. By incorporating that information into the curriculum and educating the student and manufacturer on how to take classroom skills and connect them to work applications, the transition from school to work is much smoother and more cost efficient.
Classes and lab work are held in a manufacturing-style learning environment. From the very first class, students learn on equipment very similar to the machinery they will find at their future work site. The classroom is similar to a manufacturing floor and includes the familiar sounds of a working manufacturing site. The opportunity to learn skills in the real environment trains the student in how work is done.
This program is a paid internship program for qualified students who are selected to participate. It allows students to earn while learning and completing an Associate in Applied Science Industrial Maintenance Technology degree. Current manufacturers include Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, 3M, Central Motor Wheel of America, G. R. Spring, and I. B. Moore.
Eligible students can earn up to 15 credit hours toward their first year of college. Scott County's Elkhorn Crossing School is host to BCTC's Early College for the seniors in Scott County.
