Admissions Guidelines

Ready, set, go!

If you've graduated from high school, earned a GED, or wish to continue your education by taking one or two classes, you're ready to begin at BCTC. Get started by submitting an application and some additional information.

What additional information will I need to submit?

Depending upon which type of student you are, you'll need to provide to the BCTC Office of Admissions different information. If you have questions about the admissions process, please give us a call at (859) 246-6210 or (877) 774-4872 EXT. 56210.

Beginning Freshman

(students who have never attended college before) need to provide:

  • Your official high school transcript or GED test scores
  • Official scores from a placement test such as the ACT or SAT. If you scored below an 18 on the ACT in English, a 20 in reading, or a 21 in math, you'll need to take the COMPASS test. COMPASS is free for first-time takers.

Readmit Students

Students who have attended BCTC before and have sat out for at least a semester need to provide:

  • Official transcripts of all college work attempted after they attended BCTC. Kentucky Community and Technical Colleges (KCTCS) official transcripts are not required, only official college or university transcripts outside of KCTCS.

Transfer Students

Students who have started their college course work at another college or university need to provide:

  • Official transcripts of all previous college work. Kentucky Community and Technical Colleges (KCTCS) official transcripts are not required, only official college or university transcripts outside of KCTCS.

Non-Degree Seeking Students

Students who just want to take one or two classes and are not pursuing a degree need to know the following information:

  • Students in non-degree seeking status are permitted to take only six credit hours per semester;
  • Non-degree students are not eligible to participate in federal student aid programs or to receive Veteran Educational Benefits;
  • Non-degree students who later decide to become degree-seeking must submit all required documents (official high school transcript or GED scores, any college transcripts, and any necessary international student documents) before admission; and
  • Any student who wishes to take a course in either English or math will be required to take the Computerized Placement Assessment and Support Services System (COMPASS) test or show evidence of successful completion of prerequisite college courses.

International Students

Any non-immigrant visa-holding applicant is considered an international applicant need to provide:

  • A completed International Student Application
  • Copies of your current visa and immigration documents if you are currently inside of the United States;
  • Any student whose native language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency by one of the following methods (assessment results must not be more than eighteen months old at the time of initial enrollment):
    • Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results. The minimum score for admission is 500 on the paper-based test or 61 on the internet-based test. The TOEFL code for Bluegrass Community and Technical College is 1474. For more information about the TOEFL, please visit http://www.toefl.org
    • Official Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) report with a minimum score of 73. For more information about the MELAB, please visit http://www.cambridgemichigan.org
    • Documentation showing completion of the advanced level of the Intensive English Language Program at Eastern Kentucky University or the University of Louisville, or successful completion of the fifth level of the University of Kentucky English as a Second Language Program;
    • An official transcript from an accredited American college or university or from a foreign college or university in which English is the primary language of instruction showing a minimum grades of "B" in college English 101 and English 102 or the equivalent;
    • Students that do not meet the above requirements but have a TOEFL score greater than 400 on the paper-based test, 32 on the internet-based test, or an International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) overall band score of 3.7 may be admitted to the college's English as a Second Language (ESL) program.   • A current financial or bank statement in English from the applicant's bank showing that the applicant has the necessary funds for the school year in the amount of $17,510 USD;
  • An official document which verifies the applicant's completion of the secondary level of education. Students must include notarized English translations with any Non-English documents; and
  • Official transcripts of all previous college work. Kentucky Community and Technical Colleges (KCTCS) official transcripts are not required, only official college or university transcripts outside of KCTCS. Students who attended college or university outside of the U.S. must submit an official course-by-course evaluation of their transcripts. Visiting Students

Students currently enrolled at another institution wishing to take a course or two at BCTC need to provide:

  • A letter of good standing or an official transcript from the Registrar of the current institution which reflects the current cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.). Students who are currently taking classes at another KCTCS school are not required to submit a letter of good standing. Students in visiting status are permitted to take a maximum of six credit hours per semester.

In addition, international visiting students need to provide:

  • Proof of English proficiency as stated in the international student guidelines above.
  • A current financial statement in English from the applicant's bank verifying that the applicant has the necessary funds for the school year.

If you want to enter a technical program or other selective admissions programs, you may have a few more special requirements. Are there any other admission restrictions?

Not at all. If you meet the general requirements for admission, you will be considered regardless of race, color, religion, gender, marital status, national origin, age, sexual orientation, or mental or physical disability.
