Microsoft provides Office applications for personal use to eligible employees of institutions with active Software Assurance coverage. As such, the Home Use Program (HUP) is available to faculty/staff of KCTCS and offers Office 2010 Professional Plus or Office 2008 Mac, Project Professional 2010 and Visio Premium 2010. The cost is super cheap @ $9.95/ea for electronic download with the option to purchase a backup DVD for $12. Q. Who is eligible to use the HUP?

A. Employees of KCTCS: active full/part time faculty and staff. Consultants, temporary staff, family/friends, etc. are not eligible. Basically if you’re employed by and receive a paycheck from KCTCS… you are eligible.

Q. What about students and the Home Use Program?

A. Students are excluded from the HUP, unless they’re also a student worker. Students may purchase Microsoft and other software at heavily discounted prices via the KCTCS Online Bookstores.

Q. I already have Office on my personal computer at home. Can I buy Office through the HUP and install it on the computer belonging to my child/parent/relative/neighbor/church?

A. No.

Q. What licensing rights are employees entitled to under the HUP?

A. Think of it as a temporary license. Each eligible employee is entitled to one license per application obtained via the HUP website, to be installed on the employee’s personally owned/leased computer. One instance on one computer. This temporary license expires either 1) with KCTCS’s software agreement with Microsoft (upon which you will be notified), or 2) upon termination of employment with KCTCS. Upon either of these events the license and right to use the software expires and it must be uninstalled from the employees personal computer.

Q. How is the Home Use Program different from the Work at Home program?

A. According to the terms of our license agreement with Microsoft, software acquired under the Work at Home (WAH) program can be used only for KCTCS-related business - no personal use whatsoever. HUP is for home use - 100% personal use.

Q. Will I need a product key?

A. Yes. You will receive a product key in your order confirmation email from Microsoft/Digital River.

Q. I purchased Office 2007 from the HUP website previously, how do I upgrade to Office 2010?

A. The HUP does not include upgrade rights. You will need to purchase Office 2010 from the HUP website.

Q. What if I obtained Office 2007 through the Work at Home program?

A. You may continue using Office 2007 as per the terms of the WAH program. Otherwise you may convert to HUP by uninstalling the WAH version of Office 2007 and obtaining Office 2010 via the HUP website.

Q. What about operating systems? Can I have Vista or Windows 7 for Home Use?

A. Operating systems are not included in the HUP. You may purchase operating systems for home use at heavily discounted prices from the KCTCS Online Bookstores.
