Here at BCTC there are many celebrations this Fall . . . as usual! Especially noteworthy is beginning construction of the classroom building at the developing Newtown Pike Campus in Lexington. This 92,240 square-foot building will house programs in business, information technology, computer design, and film studies, as well as general transfer courses and support areas. We appreciate the many community and legislative leaders, including Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, for joining us on a surprisingly cool August 15, to celebrate this “groundbreaking development” for BCTC. A wonderful moment in the ceremony occurred while State Representative Jimmie Lee was speaking. Representative Lee has been a key state leader in support of mental health services and was one of the architects of the legislation that brought together Eastern State Hospital, the University of Kentucky, the urban-county government, and BCTC to create this opportunity. An overcast day brightened and the sun broke through the clouds, just as Representative Lee noted the unprecedented opportunity for citizens in our region to benefit from both a new mental health hospital and a new community college campus within a few miles of each other. Clearly a moment of promise for our future!

In other news, we are celebrating student achievement with BCTC’s first legislative intern, Sarah Thomas. We appreciate State Senator Kathy Stein giving Sarah a chance to learn the inner workings of the state senate. Also, a new state-of-the-art dental hygiene clinic is in operation thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters, and the hard work of faculty and staff. Program highlights show off our excellent programs that start many students on their way to career success.

At BCTC, even with our budget challenges, we continue to actively support access and success for students who need us across Central Kentucky. Thank you for helping to advise, support, and keep open the doors of BCTC - just as we do our best to help transform the Bluegrass - one student at a time, one employer at a time, one community at a time.
