LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 25, 2010) — State dignitaries, education officials and neighborhood associations recently toured the future site of Bluegrass Community and Technical College’s Newtown Campus.
The Newtown Campus Master Plan is proposed on what is currently the site of Eastern State Hospital’s 48-acre campus, located at Newtown and Fourth Street in Lexington.
"We are excited … to be at a point where we are ready to move ahead with this project,” said BCTC President Dr. Augusta A. Julian during a brunch held at Lexmark on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry, State Rep. Jimmie Lee, State Sen. Kathy Stein, and State Rep. Jesse Crenshaw also gave brief remarks before the tour. Transportation to Eastern State Hospital was provided by shuttles and LexTran’s Colt Trolley.
Attendees toured the campus grounds and were shown which buildings and areas would be renovated and incorporated in the Newtown Master Plan. These areas include the Administration Building, Megowan Building, the historic gardens and historic cemetery. Funding is being sought to renovate the historic Laundry Building, which was constructed in 1906. The building will serve as a centerpiece of the new campus.
Other buildings, such as the Gragg Building and Wendell Building, are planned to be demolished due to the buildings’ poor condition or lack of feasibility to renovate.
Dr. Julian’s presentation on the Newtown Campus can be viewed on the BCTC YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/BluegrassCTCOfficial, and photos of the tour can be viewed on Newtown
