LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 14, 2010) – Bluegrass Community and Technical College unveiled today plans and architect’s renderings of the 20-year master plan and the first building of the BCTC Newtown Campus. The Newtown Campus Master Plan is proposed on what is currently the site of Eastern State Hospital’s forty-eight acre campus. The Campus Master Plan outlines new building development, open space, vehicular and pedestrian circulation. The plan calls for the renovation and reuse of some existing buildings. There will a total of 14-17 buildings on the campus after completion.
“The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) is excited about the new Bluegrass Community and Technical College Newtown campus and the educational opportunities it will provide citizens in the Lexington area. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved, as our presence will help revitalize a historical area of the city, and the convenient location will improve access for students. The new location will also allow BCTC to provide additional programs and services to meet the growing postsecondary education needs of the community, particularly those in high demand, high wage jobs. These types of programs are critical to transforming both the economy of our state and the city of Lexington,” said KCTCS President Michael B. McCall.
Divided into four phases; the first phase includes construction of a 90,000 GSF building that will include computer labs, lecture classrooms, learning commons, science lab, film production studio, faculty and support offices, student services, a One-Stop center and admissions offices. The first phase is estimated to cost $28,293,000 and construction will begin in March 2011 with an estimated completed date of November 2012. The college will begin classes in January 2013. The facility will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified meeting the highest green building and performance measures.
“This is the most exciting expansion of access to higher education in Lexington in many years,” said BCTC President Dr. Augusta A. Julian. “The build-out of the Newtown Campus will dramatically increase the number of students who can find high quality, affordable career, technical, and transfer education in Central Kentucky. We are so lucky to have the committed partners in the Commonwealth helping to create this incredible campus development for BCTC.”
BCTC’s move to the current Eastern State Hospital campus is the result of an innovative partnership among the state, Lexington, the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Eastern State Hospital will build a new facility on UK’s Coldstream Research Campus.
"This is a grand slam, home run for Lexington,” Mayor Jim Newberry said. “Moving Bluegrass Community and Technical College to Newtown creates a higher education triangle with Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky. Our downtown will sit in the middle of that triangle, and our citizens will benefit from the jobs and economic activity it creates.”
