At BCTC, we have begun a new initiative based on the research and strategies offered in The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling, and published by FranklinCovey in 2012.
The key focus is on identifying Wildly Important Goals (WIG). We are talking about a BIG WIG focused on moving more students through the enrollment pipeline:
In our efforts to support students, we are adding “for Student Success” (WIGSS) so that in addition to the BIG WIG, we will have WIGSS across the college and invite faculty, staff, and some students to be involved in these efforts. We will be following the guidelines and strategies from The 4 Disciplines of Execution.
Our culture at BCTC already demonstrates that we value and support involvement through standing cross-functional committees, work groups, and quick action committees to address many challenges. We hope these new strategies of execution will help us focus on what is wildly important in developing the innovative approaches and creative problem-solving needed to address barriers to students’ success. The Goal Innovation Groups for Student Success (GIGSS) can propose and be recognized and supported to work on any WIG that supports the student success pipeline under any of our Strategic Initiatives.
Key strategies include—set a Wildly Important Goal that is attainable by the GIGSS members, identify lead measures so members will know if they are making progress, track and display progress, and hold each other accountable for each member’s portion of the tasks agreed on. The college leadership has embraced the concept and is beginning to roll out this initiative among functional units. Stay tuned for updates on how we are doing on our WIGSS.
February is famously “Black History Month.” It is also American Heart Month, Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and Oral Hygiene Awareness Month. Everybody and their dog, literally, has a designated month in which to celebrate. And that is just fine. But Black History Month is the Granddaddy of celebration months and with good reason. For so long in the US, the contributions of African-Americans, as individuals and as a culture, were missing from history and from the social consciousness of the majority population. A focus on heritage and history of African-Americans is, in fact, the history of the United States with all its fear and joy, tradition and progress, nativism and openness. Black History is your history, if you are an American.
BCTC is a multi-hued and multi-faceted community. We think we are stronger with many points of view and a respectful place and way to air them. Along with many others in society today, we are working to be welcoming to people of all perspectives and backgrounds. In that effort, we have proposed a Commitment to Unity that goes like this: “BCTC welcomes and respects people of all cultures, religions, ages, socio-economic statuses, sexual orientations, gender identities, national origins, and abilities. We celebrate individual differences as we evolve to be the face of a unified world. Our differences strengthen our resolve to deliver the highest standard of education in the Bluegrass Region.”
At BCTC, we are working on ways to improve our collective and individual Cultural Competence, also called intercultural or cross-cultural understanding. These terms are typically used to mean some knowledge of the culture-specific concepts of perception, thinking, feeling, and acting. Also, culture does not only refer to ethnicity, nationality, or race. Economic, educational, and other factors also act on culture. Often the goal of Cultural Competence is improving communication and interactions for people with different cultural perspectives. In addition, policy, practices, and personnel in organizations can benefit from the work to create a culturally competent environment.
We come together to stand with our blue-eyed and brown-eyed students; our scientists and artists; our men, women, and transgender students; our cabinet makers and nurses in training; our musicians and information technicians; our introverts and extroverts; and the huge array of talents and interests and characteristics and personalities that make up BCTC.
Join me in celebrating Black History Month and all the ways our collective history and progress has made the US and Kentucky a better place.
At BCTC we have a shared culture focused on a welcoming learning environment and a commitment to student success. Additionally, we love to host events and activities that bring guests and visitors to campus. Each of BCTC’s campuses also has its own individual culture and commitment to the communities we serve. This semester, we celebrate the opening of the newest building and a new campus: the Georgetown-Scott County Campus (GSCC) - Advanced Manufacturing Center. We are welcoming more than 240 students with 15 faculty and staff who are beginning to create the culture of the GSCC. Here, and at the Danville Campus, the majority of students are in technical and career programs. Across the college, about half of the students are studying to enter careers with certificates, a diploma, or an associate degree as their goal. The others in the student population are in courses preparing to transfer to attain a bachelor’s degree in fields such as education, social work, business, information technology, nursing, or engineering.
Our regional campuses hold events and activities to support students and welcome community members onto campus.
We are grateful that these communities welcome and support BCTC students and the local campuses. We appreciate the many partners we have throughout Central Kentucky including K-12 educational districts and schools, the business community, economic development agencies, chambers of commerce, social services, training and adult education agencies, and others. It actually takes many communities to help students succeed.
A phrase I have heard describing the role of a college president is to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” The expression was actually coined by an American journalist, Chicago syndicated columnist Finley Peter Dunne (1867–1936), to describe the crucial role that newspapers play in society (Observations by Mr. Dooley (1902, 240). For many years, the expression was used only in discussions of newspapers and the media. In the 1980s, it came to be used in a religious context. In all these uses, it is a call to action.
Our college leaders need to both support and challenge. It is our role to listen first, ask questions, respond with information or insights, appreciate initiative, and guide and direct when necessary. We also need to be challenged! I have always appreciated those who are willing to take the risk of offering a different perspective or even an outright disagreement to the accepted norm. Very few of us enjoy conflict, but if we can reframe differences as the opportunity to learn from each other, it puts our differing beliefs and opinions in a new light.
Debate can clarify issues and open up dialog. It can require us to explain opinions and offer additional information. It can surface old ideas that need to be updated or can situate our opinions within closely held values. All of that can help us to make better decisions and improve commitment to a plan or initiative. I think we work better together when we can air all points of view on a problem—if the goal is improvement.
We can be co-creators of a better world when we are open to new information. When we agree to work on our areas of agreement to our mutual benefit, we can create positive change. When we can allow ourselves to be legitimately challenged, we can learn together how to be more effective. Anthropologist Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Happy New Year to all of you! Time away from classes or work responsibilities can give us a space to think about what matters in our lives. Each year, from Thanksgiving though the New Year, our focus can be on families and fun, the joy of giving, helping others not so fortunate, or time for different pursuits. We can also carve out space for New Year’s resolutions or commitment to being more of the person we prefer to be. We read articles about how to keep the pounds off and manage holiday stress. We can also use this time to consider how to address the stresses of our students!
In Fall 2016 at BCTC, we supported almost 10,000 students who are seeking to advance their educational dreams and career goals. We gave students accessible options by offering a four-day class schedule and delivering almost 30,000 credit hours online to almost 5,800 BCTC students and to about the same number of students from other colleges. Many on-campus classes are also developed as “hybrid” so that assignments and “classes” are partly online, thus giving more students even more flexibility.
We are seeing increases in multicultural students and those who experience barriers that are financial, academic, cultural, and family- or work-related. We have many different services and supports for students. For example, caring faculty and staff can help students who are new to college and may be the first in their families to enroll. The First-Year Center especially is designed to give that extra level of services first-year students need such as advising, career counseling, study skills, tutoring, laptop loans, and peer mentoring.
This Fall, students attended classes in seven BCTC locations, and we completed construction and preparation to occupy the new Georgetown-Scott County Advanced Manufacturing Center. This newest campus, dedicated to expanding the manufacturing workforce, opens to students on January 9 with programs moving from both the Leestown Campus and the Toyota plant facilities. The learn-and-work partnerships in Georgetown and at the Danville Campus gives each student the chance to build a relationship with an employer and be paid for his or her work.
We continue to add programs to meet the needs of employers and students, recently including pharmacy technician, paramedic and emergency medical technician, and supply chain management. Expansions have been implemented in surgical technology, certified medical assistant, information technology, theater and film, and business in the last couple of years. New plans, partnerships, and facilities will increase spaces for nursing and other allied health careers.
Students at BCTC will be supported to excel, with whatever mode of learning they prefer, at whichever BCTC facility they attend, in whatever program and career they pursue. New initiatives and innovative strategies are just a part of our commitment to imagine more and be more at BCTC in 2017.
Last Monday was World Kindness Day 2016. BCTC Students for Peace and Earth Justice held a program at the Cooper Campus. Kindness Day was born when a collection of humanitarian groups came together on November 13, 1997, and made a “Declaration of Kindness” to help focus on the many ways—from random acts of kindness to larger efforts like volunteering or supporting long-term helping initiatives in your community—we can help and support each other. It often costs us nothing to be kind, and I’m sure the “helper” as well as the “helpee” both gain many benefits! Each of us remembers a situation when someone unexpectedly did something nice for us. When that happens to me, I am happier all day! And yet, how often am I aware enough to decide to do that kind act for someone else?
This week, we celebrate Thanksgiving in the US. It is a time to appreciate the good things we have in our lives. Some of us are very fortunate to have the resources to live well, such as to get an education, to work at a job we love, and to be part of a community or church that feeds our souls. Some of us are struggling or frightened. Can we appreciate what we have that is positive in our lives and still reach out to help others? It is said that those who have the least material goods are often the first to open their hearts to others.
How can we be kind and thankful every day? Each of us can decide how to be more thoughtful of others and get out of our own way. I am thinking of these things now, after our divisive and contentious campaign season. Whether your team won or lost, how can we, as Americans or those who are looking for a better life here, come together to denounce hate, bigotry, blaming and shaming, and simplistic and juvenile positions on complex and weighty matters?
Many are saddened by how our national figures have been talking about and to large swaths of our multicultural and rainbow-colored population. Fear is a natural reaction to such rhetoric. It may be easy to distance ourselves from others who do not seem to share our value systems. Barriers can be brought down, however, if people are willing to see what we share rather than only what separates us. If we can be kind and thankful, we will continue to respect and celebrate diversity of background, thought, worldview, and opinion—up the point of threats or harm coming to others who are not like us. A community college is a place where we embrace the variety of ages, career interests, backgrounds, perspectives, talents, and skills of our students and our faculty and staff. Welcome to BCTC, everyone who wants to find a pathway, for themselves or others, through educational experiences, to a better life.
