English as a Second Language instruction is one of the fastest growing areas of the Community College curriculum everywhere in America. Bluegrass Community and Technical College has responded to this demand with increased classes, evening and daytime classes, and specialized sections of some writing and study strategies classes.
BCTC provides academic ESL classes for students who need to improve their English language skills before taking college level classes. These Academic ESL classes are designed to prepare students for the demands of college classes. We offer classes in academic writing and grammar, college reading and vocabulary, as well as listening and speaking. In these classes students work on skills such as writing essays, reading college level texts, giving presentations, listening to lectures, and taking notes in the college classroom. These classes meet from two to four times each week and last for a 16 week semester. Classes are 4 crediit hours.
Students whose native language is not English can find a class to improve their reading, writing and speaking skills. Classes are affordable and are scheduled at different times of the day and evening. Placement into our academic ESL classes is based on results of the COMPASS/ESL test. The test is given for free on our Cooper Drive campus. Students whose Compass score is too low to enroll in a college level ESL class can enroll in the free classes offered at the Newtown North Campus at 690 Newtown Pike to improve their English.
This web site provides contact information for faculty who teach ESL classes. Information about current classes and classes that will be offered next semester is also provided.
