Student Profile: Student pres. gains much-needed boost with BCTC education

Michelle Harris ShieldsIn high school, she was a focused honor student. But it’s taken Michelle Harris-Shields a long five years – with challenges in between – to complete a two-year degree. Bluegrass Community and Technical College gave her the boost she needed.

Shields, 39, of Lexington, serves as the student body president and plans to graduate in May 2011 with an associate’s degree in psychology. Read full profile

Alumni Profile: BCTC lifts 'heart and soul' of nursing grad

Mindy VapIt was always Mindy Vap’s childhood dream to be a nurse. But it took dropping out of college –and support from instructors when she returned— to realize it was in her heart and soul.

“It was the compassion and personalities of the instructors that drew me to them and want to be like them,” said Vap, who graduated from Bluegrass Community and Technical College’s nursing program in May 2010. “You have to know if you really want to be a nurse; if being a nurse isn’t in your heart and soul, then it’s not right for you.” Read full profile or view YouTube video

Employee Spotlight: Staff member goes Platinum for President's Challenge

BCTC fall 2010 semester opens with record enrollment

Preliminary numbers indicated double-digit enrollment growth at Bluegrass Community and Technical College when fall classes started Wednesday, Aug. 18. Approximately 12,400 students were enrolled, a growth of roughly 13 percent from the first day of classes last year. Read full article

Federal science grant fuels BCTC biotech project

At Bluegrass Community and Technical College, a $445,000 National Science Foundation grant has helped kick off the Biotechnology Project, a program that aims to increase the skilled workforce of biotechnology lab technicians in the Central Kentucky region. Read full article

Funds from Recovery Act bolster dental hygiene program

Bluegrass Community and Technical College’s dental hygiene program recently received a $170,600 federal grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Read full article
