Starfish is composed of Starfish Early Alert which is an early warning and student tracking system and Starfish Connect which is an educational support networking system. The Early Alert system alerts students, instructors, and advisors via email when students are not performing as expected in their courses. The Connect system gives students the ability to contact and make appointments with members of their “My Success Network” such as instructors and advisors.

For instructors, Starfish allows you to receive email notifications when flags are raised concerning the academic performance of your students, raise flags when you are concerned about a student’s academic performance, raise flags to recognize students with outstanding academic performance, clear flags when students have shown improvement, enter notes into student folders, and set up office hours for students to schedule appointments with you.

For advisors, Starfish allows you to receive email notifications when flags are raised concerning the academic performance of your advisees, enter notes into the student folders of your advisees, and set up office hours for advisees to schedule appointments with you.

To access the Starfish interface, just log into Blackboard and click the Starfish link.

FAQ

Q: Can I raise a flag if I have a concern about my student? How?
A: Yes, you can. Sign in with Blackboard, click on Starfish tab and then click on Students. You can sort your students by groups by clicking on Term. Choose a student and then click on Flag students or flag icon on the upper left corner.
Q: How do I know when the issue is resolved?
A: Two ways to find out: (1) Sign in with Blackboard, click on Starfish tab and click on Students and choose the student you previously had concern with, look at the concern flag and then click on that flag to find update information. Or (2) Go to Starfish tab in Blackboard and click on Profile and then click on Email Notifications. You have a choice to check the box to have the system to notify you when a flag is cleared.
Q: Can I lower a flag when the issue is resolved?
A: Certainly. Go to Blackboard, click on Starfish tab and then click on Students. Click on a student’s name you previously had concern with and then click on Clear Flag tab next to the flag you want to clear with.
Q: What are these tabs Raise Flag, Send Email, Add Notes?
A: These tabs are there to help you. Raising flag is a way to alert advisers and select staff to students’ concerns. Send email is another way to class emails or mass emails as a way to communicate. Add notes is there if you want to add private or notes to advisers/coach on students’ concerns.
Q: Who can see certain flags?
A: Currently, only student’s instructor, academic advisor and select staff will see the flags.
Q: When can I raise a flag?
A: You can raise a flag whenever you have a concern about a student.
Q: How do I manually raise a flag?
A: Go to Blackboard, click on Starfish tab and then click on Students. Click on a student’s name you have a concern with and then click on Flag tab and the box will appear and you will need to choose which concern you have with and you also have an option to add a comment.
