The Equine Studies program at Locust Trace AgriScience Farm has a new partner: the North American Racing Academy (NARA). Locust Trace, which is part of Fayette County Public Schools, and NARA, which is part of Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC), are offering dual credit classes to high school juniors and seniors attending Locust Trace.
The partnership opens up new opportunities for Locust Trace students by providing them access to some of the world’s foremost horsemen. Many NARA students have earned internships and full-time positions through NARA’s relationships in the horse industry. In addition, BCTC-NARA has provided several off-the-track retired Thoroughbred Racehorses to Locust Trace to give the students an opportunity for hands-on learning.
“This partnership is an excellent opportunity for our students to gain industry experience while they are still in high school,” Kari McGee, Locust Trace Guidance Counselor, said.
To help mark this new alliance, perennial leading trainer Ken McPeek will kick off a speaker series at Locust Trace at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013. McPeek will offer students his unique perspective on what it takes to succeed in the horse racing and breeding industries and will touch on his career, secrets on successfully training and selecting racehorses and the importance of new technologies in the racing industry.
NARA faculty and students will also be talking about the career and training opportunities available to young men and women interested in the horse racing and breeding industries Saturday at Keeneland's Sunrise Trackside Saturday, October. A NARA Equicizer, which simulates riding a racehorse, will also be on hand so a few lucky kids can try their hand at race riding. The event starts at 7:00 a.m. and runs until 8:30 a.m. trackside in Keeneland’s Equestrian Dining Room.
