Faculty Guide to the Library
Books circulate to employees for a period of 90 days. All audiovisual items not on Reserve circulate for 14 days, except for audiobooks in the Cooper Popular Collection, for which the borrowing period is 28 days. Reference materials circulate for 24 hours only to employees. Periodicals may also circulate to employees on a very limited basis. Any book or audiovisual item may be renewed if another patron has not placed a hold on it. If you have questions about library circulation policies, contact Terry Buckner at (859) 246-6397 or Maria Yosifova at (859) 246-6388
Course Management System
The college has a course management system available for you to use for your courses: Blackboard (KCTCS eLearning).
Employees and students have access to many databases and electronic books from the library website: http://bluegrass.kctcs.edu/Library.
Databases can be accessed from the main page of the library website and also from the articles page at http://bluegrass.kctcs.edu/Library/Articles.aspx. The articles web page also includes information about accessing databases from off campus through the BCTC proxy server. Links to electronic books databases, as well as to book catalogs, can be found on the books web page at http://bluegrass.kctcs.edu/Library/Books.
You must be an authorized BCTC employee or student to gain access to licensed resources, so please use the links on our library web pages to access databases so that off-campus access can be granted through the EZproxy authentication process when applicable. If you have questions about off-campus access, contact Maureen Cropper at (859) 246-6394.
Faculty Resources of Interest
The library has many resources that may be of special interest to faculty. For example, the Chronicle of Higher Education is available to faculty, for the latest news in higher education. We also have several libguides (library guides) geared to faculty needs, including Building Student Information Literacy Skills - We Can Help!, Open Access Resources for Educators, Copyright for Educators, and Accessibility Resources for Faculty. We also have an Assignment Calculator tool that may be useful for your students, to help them with time management for their research paper writing assignments.
We can borrow materials for faculty, staff, and students from the University of Kentucky libraries and other BCTC library locations, as well as from other libraries throughout the world. Materials may take two weeks or longer to arrive. Materials moved between BCTC campuses should take about a week or less. You may complete an Interlibrary Loan form online at: https://bluegrass.kctcs.edu/Library/Interlibrary_Loan.
BCTC librarians provide instruction in various ways to help students learn about using library resources for research. A number of LibGuides, Subject Guides, and How Do I ? Guides are available for students to learn information literacy skills of how to formulate research strategies and use various library resources. In addition, an online Library Research Guide is located on our website. Opportunities for instruction via other methods, including video instruction or classroom visits, may be available as well. Please contact the library for more information.

We encourage employees to make recommendations for purchases. You can recommend materials for purchase at any time during the year. Contact any of the librarians for assistance in preparing purchase requests. The online book purchase request form is at: http://bluegrass.kctcs.edu/Library/Resources_for_Ordering_Books.

Plagiarism Resources for Faculty
KCTCS Policy on Plagiarism and resources related to plagiarism: Plagiarism Resources for Faculty
For Cooper Campus reserve items, contact Maria Yosifova at (859) 246-6388. For Newtown Campus Reserves, contact Terry Buckner at (859) 246-6397. Allow at least one week processing for items to be put on reserve. Please do not assign reserve readings to students before they are processed and made available at the circulation desk. If you anticipate putting articles or other papers (lecture notes, exam copies) on reserve frequently, see Jenni Link or Terry Buckner about setting up a notebook to which items may be added throughout the semester. Reference items are not placed on reserve.
Reserve items circulate for 2 hours within the Cooper Library or Learning Commons, or 24 hours (overnight checkout), as specified by the faculty member. Longer reserve borrowing periods are possible. Space restrictions allow only up to two copies of any item on reserve. We arrange reserve materials by course prefix and number, so make sure your students know the course and number as well as the title of the material they are requesting. If you have required readings on reserve, you might include this information in your syllabus. We require a valid ID card for library check-outs, including reserve materials. A BCTC student ID is preferred, but we will accept another type of picture identification.
Faculty are responsible for adhering to applicable laws regarding use of copyrighted materials placed on reserve. Contact Maria Yosifova (for Cooper Reserves) or Terry Buckner (for Newtown Reserves) for details on our policies on copyrighted print and audiovisual materials.
