The Science Education Center will support up-to-date laboratory experiences and feature
dynamic classroom technology. It will include four large classrooms, student support
areas, offices for 20 faculty and staff, and labs for biology, anatomy and physiology,
microbiology, molecular biology, organismal biology, physics and
astronomy, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. The building will also be home to two technical programs, biotechnology and environmental science.
The facility will feature a Biotechnology Contract Service lab which will increase
collaboration between faculty, students, and professionals in the emerging biotechnology
industry in Central Kentucky. Students will have an opportunity to increase participation
in undergraduate research to assist in preparation for transfer to four-year colleges
The construction on the building, which was designed by Omni Architects, will begin in April 2016 with expected opening in January 2018. When completed, the Science Education Center will be three stories tall and 64,000 sq. ft. The building is designed as a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Building and will include many sustainable design features.
