Women's History Month
Celebrate Women in March
Each day this March, in honor of Women’s History Month, 31 women at BCTC – faculty, staff and students – will be highlighted here and recognized across all BCTC campuses.
Join us in celebrating these remarkable BCTC women, as well as so many women from our past, who dared to break down barriers, shatter stereotypes, and pave the way for us. We owe these daring women, and so many others like them, a great debt.
Why do we celebrate women in March?
Why do we celebrate women in March? Women lobbied for national recognition of their historical achievements, and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation declaring National Women’s History Week during the week of March 8th , the official date of International Women’s Day. National Women’s History Week served as platform to honor the amazing accomplishments of women in art, activism, science, and politics.
But one week was not enough to honor the important contributions of women.
In 1987, after the movement gained momentum, with the help of states and women’s organizations across the country, the National Women's History Project successfully lobbied Congress to expand the week-long celebration into a month-long observance, leading to the establishment of Women's History Month. Since then, Women's History Month has been officially recognized and celebrated nationwide every March.
Women's History Month brings us together to honor and to celebrate the remarkable achievements and vital contributions of women in history, many of whom did not live long enough to see change come. In honor of their sacrifices, we remember women’s struggles and celebrate women’s triumphs during the month of March; we also advocate for gender equality to empower all women each day of the year.

What relaxes me the most is cooking, watching movies and TV shows, and having meaningful

What I'm most passionate about is discovering new places, new cultures, new foods,

Tell us anything else about yourself that you want folks to know.
I prefer having conversations about ideas rather than about people.
What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
"What you resist persists" by Carl Jung. I love this quote because it means that the
more strongly you resist certain emotions or thoughts, the longer they will stay with
you. Instead of avoiding, accepting them helps reduce their power and allow you to
find a resolution.

called Women in Art and Art History. This course explores the visual art created by

What is your favorite way to relax and unwind?
Watching Westerns with my dad. As a single teenage mother, I had a lot of bad days
as I tried to figure life out. My granny never let me cry, whine or complain to her,
BUT she’d let me come in her room and watch Westerns. We didn’t talk; we just cheered
for the good guy together, but I always felt better when I left. In a Western, the
good guy always wins, the bad guys are brought to justice, and the wrongfully accused
are vindicated. They make you feel good, believe in justice again.
What are you most passionate about?
Everything. If I’m cooking, I pretend I’m a culinary chef. If I’m making my bed, I

I never really had a career path mapped out. Instead, I was fortunate enough to be
presented with opportunities and I took them. Some worked out better than others,
but I always came away with something good - more knowledge, stronger skills, or new
mentors. So a favorite quote is "If a window of opportunity appears, don't pull down
the shade."

Associate Dean of Financial Aid

more important now than ever that we rely on each other and our faith to sustain us
as we navigate this transitional season of life.
Tell us anything else about yourself that you want folks to know.
I would like for people to know that my greatest role in life is being the mother
to 3 daughters. My twins Kennedy and Karington are 21, and my youngest is 17. My girls
are high academic achievers and will graduate this year, with one completing college
a semester early. I am also a proud graduate of Kentucky State University, where I
remain active by mentoring students and assisting them with scholarship opportunities.
In 1994 I was crowned Miss Kentucky State University and exactly 30 years later, my
daughter Karington was crowned as the Homecoming Queen at Morehead State University!
My youngest daughter Makenzie follows my love for theatre and acting, and Kennedy
is a natural servant leader and has a big heart of compassion for all. It is an honor
to share such a legacy and have them follow in my footsteps in some way. I am thrilled
with excitement to see just how this script will unfold as they embark upon new journeys.

I am proud to be a first generation Latina! I get to represent my Mexican American
culture everywhere I go, and it has taught me that anything is possible. My family
has shown me the value of hard work and I am truly grateful for their unwavering support
throughout my journey. Being the first in my family to go to college, it was difficult
to know what the next steps for me were but figuring it out meant that I was able
to guide others along the right path, and assist in empowering them with education.
Knowledge truly is power, and it is important especially today to remember that nobody
can take away your mind.
What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
Growing up, one thing my mom would always told me to be a better person than I was
yesterday. I've come to realize that this takes a lot of reflection on the person
I have been today, and what I can do, change, or add to my life to better myself,
and it doesn't necessarily have to be something drastic. It can be as simple as drinking
a bit of extra water or smiling at those who pass by. I would give this advice to
anyone because it shifts your focus from comparing yourself to others, at the end
of the day it is only you. It teaches us introspection, discipline, and to love ourselves
a little more every day.

I changed my major five times before finding the right path. I initially pursued Biology but quickly realized I could not handle the sight of blood. Psychology did not feel like the right fit after a challenging first test. I excelled in Mass Communication but found the early morning news shifts in Television Broadcasting unsustainable. Theater/Vocal Music were my true passions and came naturally to me, but my parents did not support that field of study. They were fearful I would struggle as an artist.
Ultimately, I chose Speech Communication as my major and Vocal Music as my minor, a decision that brought me fulfillment. I later earned a Master of Arts in Communication and Theater Arts. Despite changing my major multiple times, I stayed on track and graduated a semester early with honors. This experience reinforced the importance of exploration in discovering where you truly belong. Do not be afraid to embrace the journey.

Thank you for the nomination and I am humbled to be featured in 31 women of BCTC along
with all the wonderful women.
I started my education journey at BCTC and now employed at BCTC, it is a full circle. I am proud of being bi-lingual (Hindi, Gujarati, English). I feel joy when I get to talk in my language to assist students or say hello to their family and have small conversations. I started speaking English after moving to USA, and I think I do okay in speaking it. I am shy and introverted, kind in nature, and hard working. If I can be a fraction of who my family is, I have made them proud, I hope.
What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
I have always heard conversations in my family,
There is no power or status bigger than divine power, so always believe in God and have a faith (even if when you struggle). God is always watching, so believe in Karma. Debits and credits of our life’s balance sheet are handled/reviewed in the divine court. Good Karma will follow you and will be the best credits in the god’s court.
It’s easier said than done, but be honest, work hard and share knowledge. Learn from everyone and be kind.

moving around often helped me gain the confidence to adapt and connect with people
easily.
What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
1. There is no reason to ever go cave diving.
2. You are exactly where you're meant to be right now. Sometimes, great things and

a new home, a career opportunity, or a special person, don’t exist – it’s that they
may be lying dormant until you're truly ready for them. Don’t give up! Remember, sometimes
the best things take time to reveal themselves.

resulted in multiple fractures in my back after a nasty fall from the balance beam.

I have been blessed to have many incredible mentors who have given me solid advice
and unconditional love and support throughout my life. I would encourage everyone
to always have a mentor or two... someone more seasoned and also someone younger.
We have a lot to learn from each other no matter our age. As a part of having a mentor:
stay curious, approach every opportunity the mindset of a beginner open and willing
to learn, and don't be scared to take a risk- create something new, take the trip,
don't be afraid to be the "only one" in the room. So many opportunities came my way
when I was completely and utterly scared but went anyway, asked for help, and connected
with the people who were making their communities better.
