Women's History Month

a group of women stand together

Celebrate Women in March

Each day this March, in honor of Women’s History Month, 31 women at BCTC – faculty, staff and students – will be highlighted here and recognized across all BCTC campuses.

Join us in celebrating these remarkable BCTC women, as well as so many women from our past, who dared to break down barriers, shatter stereotypes, and pave the way for us.  We owe these daring women, and so many others like them, a great debt.

Why do we celebrate women in March?

Why do we celebrate women in March?  Women lobbied for national recognition of their historical achievements, and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation declaring National Women’s History Week during the week of March 8th , the official date of International Women’s Day.  National Women’s History Week served as platform to honor the amazing accomplishments of women in art, activism, science, and politics.

But one week was not enough to honor the important contributions of women.

In 1987, after the movement gained momentum, with the help of states and women’s organizations across the country, the National Women's History Project successfully lobbied Congress to expand the week-long celebration into a month-long observance, leading to the establishment of Women's History Month. Since then, Women's History Month has been officially recognized and celebrated nationwide every March.

Women's History Month brings us together to honor and to celebrate the remarkable achievements and vital contributions of women in history, many of whom did not live long enough to see change come.  In honor of their sacrifices, we remember women’s struggles and celebrate women’s triumphs during the month of March; we also advocate for gender equality to empower all women each day of the year.

What is your favorite thing about BCTC?
One of my favorite things about BCTC is how much people care about each other, whether through the support available or the events that bring the community together.

What is your favorite way to relax and unwind?
What relaxes me the most is cooking, watching movies and TV shows, and having meaningful conversations with my friends.

What are you most passionate about?
What I'm most passionate about is discovering new places, new cultures, new foods, and how different people think and act based on their history.

Tell us anything else about yourself that you want folks to know.
I prefer having conversations about ideas rather than about people.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
"What you resist persists" by Carl Jung. I love this quote because it means that the more strongly you resist certain emotions or thoughts, the longer they will stay with you. Instead of avoiding, accepting them helps reduce their power and allow you to find a resolution.

In honor of Women's history month, I'd like to share that I teach a course at BCTC called Women in Art and Art History. This course explores the visual art created by women and non-binary individuals from diverse global cultures, fostering an appreciation for their unique contributions to the art world. Through engaging creative projects students examine the art of women within various thematic contexts, such as intersectional feminism, religion, politics, family, sexuality, and technology.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
“There is an aspect of our vocation that is sacred; our work is not merely to share information but to share in the intellectual and spiritual growth of our students. I entered the classroom with the conviction that it was crucial for me and every other student to be an active participant not a passive consumer.” -bell hooks from Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom.

What is your favorite thing about BCTC?
The environment. The faculty and staff have , created, nurtured, and sustained an environment full of community. Students feel comfortable asking questions, requesting assistance, and showing kindness to one another. It helped me adjust when I first got to BCTC, and I needed that so much.

What is your favorite way to relax and unwind?
Watching Westerns with my dad. As a single teenage mother, I had a lot of bad days as I tried to figure life out. My granny never let me cry, whine or complain to her, BUT she’d let me come in her room and watch Westerns. We didn’t talk; we just cheered for the good guy together, but I always felt better when I left. In a Western, the good guy always wins, the bad guys are brought to justice, and the wrongfully accused are vindicated. They make you feel good, believe in justice again.

What are you most passionate about?
Everything. If I’m cooking, I pretend I’m a culinary chef. If I’m making my bed, I pretend I’m Martha Stewart. Put passion into everything you put energy into and you will reap joy.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
I never really had a career path mapped out. Instead, I was fortunate enough to be presented with opportunities and I took them. Some worked out better than others, but I always came away with something good - more knowledge, stronger skills, or new mentors. So a favorite quote is "If a window of opportunity appears, don't pull down the shade."

So many things. Student success will always be my number one priority. Additionally, ensuring inclusivity and equity among all students and making sure they have all the tools necessary to succeed. This has been the most rewarding experience of my life, and I am humbled and honored to represent and be featured at BCTC, a place that I have truly and unequivocally fallen in love with.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
Something I have tried to instill in my children is to never settle for mediocre. Never end up a troll or rock under a bridge that is mossy and has not moved; either out of fear or allowing life to wash over top of you. Robert Frost's Poem, The Road Not Taken - "I shall be telling this with a sign somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference."

stacy webster Stacy Webster
Associate Professor of Communication

What is your major or what area of the college do you work in?
Communication

What is your favorite thing about BCTC?
My favorite thing about BCTC is the diversity of our students. Our students represent many multicultural backgrounds and various walks of life. It is a joy to teach them positive communication skills and new concepts they can utilize to enhance their interpersonal relationships. I enjoy watching them interact with their classmates while creating long lasting friendships and bonds that could possibly last a lifetime.

My favorite way to relax and unwind is to spend time in the company of good friends. I love to do this by enjoying a nice dinner, movie, musical or theatrical production. I have always had an affinity for the arts and was very involved in theatre and orchestra during my youth. As a way of practicing self-care, I schedule time to regularly engage in fellowship and fun with friends.

What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about my family and my faith. I grew up the youngest of seven children in Memphis, TN. My parents always instilled within us the importance of being a close-knit family. My siblings and I are still very close today as we each assist in caring for our aging parents who recently celebrated 66 years of marriage! It is more important now than ever that we rely on each other and our faith to sustain us as we navigate this transitional season of life.

Tell us anything else about yourself that you want folks to know.
I would like for people to know that my greatest role in life is being the mother to 3 daughters. My twins Kennedy and Karington are 21, and my youngest is 17. My girls are high academic achievers and will graduate this year, with one completing college a semester early. I am also a proud graduate of Kentucky State University, where I remain active by mentoring students and assisting them with scholarship opportunities. In 1994 I was crowned Miss Kentucky State University and exactly 30 years later, my daughter Karington was crowned as the Homecoming Queen at Morehead State University! My youngest daughter Makenzie follows my love for theatre and acting, and Kennedy is a natural servant leader and has a big heart of compassion for all. It is an honor to share such a legacy and have them follow in my footsteps in some way. I am thrilled with excitement to see just how this script will unfold as they embark upon new journeys.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone." I've found that some of the most meaningful growth happens when we challenge ourselves to step into the unknown. Whether it’s a student navigating their education or a colleague embracing new opportunities, I believe in supporting and encouraging others as they take those steps, cheering them on every step of the way.

What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about people! Every person I meet has a unique story, a journey they have taken to get to where they are today and for me it is a privilege to be able to hear it. Everyone has their own perspective, and I have been able to learn so much from others. I love being able to help others whether its with a homework assignment, a ride home, or being there to listen to while they talk, I am happy to be there.

Tell us anything else about yourself that you want folks to know.
I am proud to be a first generation Latina! I get to represent my Mexican American culture everywhere I go, and it has taught me that anything is possible. My family has shown me the value of hard work and I am truly grateful for their unwavering support throughout my journey. Being the first in my family to go to college, it was difficult to know what the next steps for me were but figuring it out meant that I was able to guide others along the right path, and assist in empowering them with education. Knowledge truly is power, and it is important especially today to remember that nobody can take away your mind.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
Growing up, one thing my mom would always told me to be a better person than I was yesterday. I've come to realize that this takes a lot of reflection on the person I have been today, and what I can do, change, or add to my life to better myself, and it doesn't necessarily have to be something drastic. It can be as simple as drinking a bit of extra water or smiling at those who pass by. I would give this advice to anyone because it shifts your focus from comparing yourself to others, at the end of the day it is only you. It teaches us introspection, discipline, and to love ourselves a little more every day.

I changed my major five times before finding the right path. I initially pursued Biology but quickly realized I could not handle the sight of blood. Psychology did not feel like the right fit after a challenging first test. I excelled in Mass Communication but found the early morning news shifts in Television Broadcasting unsustainable. Theater/Vocal Music were my true passions and came naturally to me, but my parents did not support that field of study. They were fearful I would struggle as an artist.

Ultimately, I chose Speech Communication as my major and Vocal Music as my minor, a decision that brought me fulfillment. I later earned a Master of Arts in Communication and Theater Arts. Despite changing my major multiple times, I stayed on track and graduated a semester early with honors. This experience reinforced the importance of exploration in discovering where you truly belong. Do not be afraid to embrace the journey.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?

What is your major or what area of the college do you work in?
I work in the Library. Do you know how many people will ask me if librarians get to read books all day? It's not true! We do like a good read but I say go into library work if the thing you love most is people (and helping people).

What is your favorite thing about BCTC?
The individuals I meet and work with. Being a small piece of our students’ journeys and supporting all the faculty and staff in their hard work is a nourishing thing!

What is your favorite way to relax and unwind?
Reflecting on the good. In the busy times this may be stopping and looking into my puppy dogs eyes and telling him what a good boy he is (he really is just the best). I do love a good read and the opportunity to read late into a night. When I can I love to be outside and there is nothing that can reset me better than being deep into the woods and breathing in among the trees! I have always been a maker and finding the time to move in and out of my many crafty hobbies helps me to relax and recharge.

What are you most passionate about?
Access and opportunity!

One person who believes in you no matter what is an amazingly powerful thing. I had that and I am so grateful. There is just no way I would be where I am if I didn't. If you do not have that find yourself an institution like BCTC where amazing faculty and staff believe you belong and believe that you can and will achieve.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?

Tell us anything else about yourself that you want folks to know.
Thank you for the nomination and I am humbled to be featured in 31 women of BCTC along with all the wonderful women.

I started my education journey at BCTC and now employed at BCTC, it is a full circle. I am proud of being bi-lingual (Hindi, Gujarati, English). I feel joy when I get to talk in my language to assist students or say hello to their family and have small conversations. I started speaking English after moving to USA, and I think I do okay in speaking it. I am shy and introverted, kind in nature, and hard working. If I can be a fraction of who my family is, I have made them proud, I hope.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
I have always heard conversations in my family,

There is no power or status bigger than divine power, so always believe in God and have a faith (even if when you struggle). God is always watching, so believe in Karma. Debits and credits of our life’s balance sheet are handled/reviewed in the divine court. Good Karma will follow you and will be the best credits in the god’s court.

It’s easier said than done, but be honest, work hard and share knowledge. Learn from everyone and be kind.

I’ve never met a stranger – I absolutely love meeting new people! Engaging in conversations and getting to know others is something I really enjoy. Growing up in a military family, moving around often helped me gain the confidence to adapt and connect with people easily.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
1. There is no reason to ever go cave diving.

2. You are exactly where you're meant to be right now. Sometimes, great things and opportunities are just waiting to unfold. It's not that the things you desire, like a new home, a career opportunity, or a special person, don’t exist – it’s that they may be lying dormant until you're truly ready for them. Don’t give up! Remember, sometimes the best things take time to reveal themselves.

Associate Dean for Global Learning

What is your major or what area of the college do you work in?
I am the Associate Dean of Global Learning. I completed my Master's of Art Degree in Spanish and Latin American Literature from the University of Tennessee.

What is your favorite thing about BCTC?
I love the people! We have incredible students, faculty, and staff that bring so much passion, creativity, and knowledge to our college. I learn something every day. Also, BCTC has given me the opportunity to develop programs that help connect our students and faculty/staff to the world. I love it!

What is your favorite way to relax and unwind?
I love to paint with acrylics, watercolor, and oil pastels. I also love to work out. I take hot yoga boot camp classes two or three times a week. I also still do gymnastics. Movement and creativity are my ways of grounding myself and finding peace.

What are you most passionate about?
First and foremost, my son! I love being his mom and helping him become the person he creates himself to be. I am also very dedicated to educational access, immigrant rights, and accessibility. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to be and become who they were created to be.

Tell us anything else about yourself that you want folks to know.
I am fluent in Spanish, and I lived in Costa Rica while I was finishing my undergraduate degree. I love to travel. I was also a competitive gymnast growing up, but had to pivot to cheerleading, track, and fast pitch softball after a terrible injury that resulted in multiple fractures in my back after a nasty fall from the balance beam.

What is a quote or piece of wisdom you would share?
I have been blessed to have many incredible mentors who have given me solid advice and unconditional love and support throughout my life. I would encourage everyone to always have a mentor or two... someone more seasoned and also someone younger. We have a lot to learn from each other no matter our age. As a part of having a mentor: stay curious, approach every opportunity the mindset of a beginner open and willing to learn, and don't be scared to take a risk- create something new, take the trip, don't be afraid to be the "only one" in the room. So many opportunities came my way when I was completely and utterly scared but went anyway, asked for help, and connected with the people who were making their communities better.

What is your favorite way to relax and unwind?
I love to read, especially thriller/suspense novels. I try to read at least one book per week.

This is perhaps an unusual response, but I love being a working mom. I find so much joy and fulfillment in being a mom to my two kiddos (8 and 3 years old,) and I also feel a strong sense of purpose and enthusiasm about my work. Neither role is easy, and it's challenging to balance both, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Another thing that I really love about my job (and BCTC in general) is the community partnerships. I think that access to educational opportunities is such an important component of strong communities. I love when we get to partner with local schools, businesses, and community organizations to create new opportunities and bring new programs to life to serve our community members.

What is your favorite thing about BCTC?
The diversity and the communities. The way that so many people, from so many walks of life can come together and create a community at college. Building connections that last, relationships with peers that raise us to be greater then we are. The sense of community that so many different individuals care for in order to make BCTC a home away for home for those who may not have close family connections and for that may. BCTC has strengthened my character and pushes me daily to bring my own authentic style of open communication and fun to those around me.

What is your favorite way to relax and unwind?
My favorite way to unwind is either going to the gym and pushing my stresses away, while pulling my focus back to neutral to let me take on the next day. Orrrr cuddling into a warm blanket and turning the fire on while turning on a original gothic horror or psychological horror.
