The Promesa Project engages community members in recruitment and informational activities that encourage Latino/Hispanic and other multicultural students to complete high school and enroll in college.
The Promesa mentors promise to help the comunidad achieve a college education by gathering information about college and university processes and sharing such information with families and with students. They promise to encourage and mentor students so that they can achieve a college education and become our next generation of leaders.
Promesa mentors will also assist in the planning and implementation of events designed to expose students to their post-secondary opportunities such as the College Experience Camp, the Latino/Multicultural Student College Fair, high school mentoring visits and more.
A week-long camp in July that provides our future leaders with a supportive, culturally and linguistically relevant environment in which to ask questions about college life, to experience classroom lectures and seminars, and develop career goals. The camp also serves to improve students self esteem and self-knowledge as they are exposed to Latino/Chicano history and culture. By providing Heritage Spanish courses, students Improve proficiency in Spanish and the courses expose them to the values and benefits of being proficient in two world languages. Students also explore different career and educational opportunities thus illustrating the many career opportunities available for bilingual English-Spanish speakers.
Individualized campus visits to one of BCTC s campuses. The visit includes a college student led tour, class observation in a field of the student s interest, college preparedness and scholarship workshops and lunch.
A linguistically and culturally relevant college fair that highlights specific opportunities for Latino/Multicultural students in regards to college admissions, scholarships and more. The fair also includes workshops for students in the areas of Financial Aid and Scholarships, College 101, Chicano/Latino History, Self-Esteem, Leadership and more.
One on one follow-up and individualized educational planning for students who participate in the College Experience Camp and/or the College Experience Days.
