Selective Admission Information

ATTENTION: The Application deadline is May 1st of each year!

Take responsibility for your education and selection. Print this form and keep your own selective admission score.

The nature of the selection process for any Selective Admissions program at Bluegrass Community and Technical College is a competitive process. All applicants meeting the appropriate academic requirements shall be considered equally for admission regardless of economic or social status, race, color, religion, sex, marital status, beliefs, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical or mental disability.

The Surgical Technology program is a selective admission health program. The purpose of the selective admissions process is to create a ranking system that allows us to identify students who are most likely to succeed in Surgical Technology Program. This system has been adopted to increase pass rates, meet accreditation standards, eliminate waiting list and to promote student success. This ranking will be used to create a priority admissions list, not an exclusion list. Therefore, all students are eligible to apply to the Surgical Technology program and be ranked by the selective admission criteria.

The first phase of the selective admission process:

The process for applying is a Complete Application Packet format. Students must submit all documents below in one envelope to be considered for the program. Even if you have applied before and/or are currently enrolled, we will need all documents resubmitted to one of several locations: The Office of Admissions (Cooper Campus) 119 Oswald Building or The One Stop Student Service Center (Leestown Campus), Building C by the application deadline. Only complete packets will be processed and considered for the program.

  1. Create a Selective Admissions System account. Once you have an active account you can print a program checklist to begin the process. You must submit the checklist with your packet.
  2. Students who are currently enrolled in classes at BCTC must submit a complete packet of all documents listed here. Students who are not currently enrolled in classes at BCTC must fill out an application for admission and a complete packet of all documents.
  3. Official transcripts of all post-secondary education attempted. Transcripts must be submitted from EACH college or university previously attended and must show every period of enrollment. Transcripts from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System do not need to be submitted.
    1. Documentation of the completion of Surgical Technology program prerequisites with a grade of C or better by the start of the program
  4. In order to be considered for admission to the Surgical Technology Program, each applicant must attend a mandatory preadmission conference with the Program Coordinator and obtain a verification form with the signature of the presenter for the selective admission packet. Please refer to the preadmission conference website for further information.
    1. Additionally, you may view the Admissions Surgical Technology PowerPoint to review admission requirements. However, please note that viewing this PowerPoint does not meet the standard for the required preadmission conference.

The second phase of the selective admission process is accomplished with a point system that ranks students according to points earned in the following areas:

  1. The point system will be based on grades in each of the following courses. The grades will assigned point values as follows; A = 10, B = 6, C = 2.
    1. Anatomy & Physiology I
    2. Anatomy & Physiology II
    3. Computer Lit
    4. Microbiology
    5. Medical terminology

    * If a student completes a pre-requisite(s) via transfer credits from another college or university that requires a Chemistry course to meet the requirements of BIO 137 and 139, only the anatomy/physiology courses will be used on the selective admission worksheet/scoring criteria. For example: if the transfer work is coming from EKU BIO171 (A)/301(B)/Che105 (C), on the scoring worksheet you would get 10 points for the “A” in BIO171 and 6 points for “B” in BIO301. No points will be awarded for the CHE 105 course, however it must still have been passed with a grade of “C” or better to be accepted.

**If a student completes a pre-requisite(s) via a Bypass Exam, no points will be awarded in the selective admission process. This is due to the fact Bypass Exam are not being graded like other classes and are evaluated on a pass/fail format.

  2. Cumulative College GPA will be added to the course points and the selection will be based on the total scores on the 54 point scale.

As a result of the selective admission score, the top 24 students are accepted into the program. In the event that two or more students have the same point total with only one remaining opening in the program, the tie will be broken using cumulative GPA. BCTC will notify students that are accepted upon the completion of the selective admissions process.
