Always on the side of students

Sep 18, 2017

I have written a number of times in this BLOG about the college’s open and inclusive mission and climate, welcoming all who can make use of our support to reach their educational and career goals.  Our resources are directed to, first, excellent academics, and second, supportive structures across the college that allow students to strive to be their best selves.  We have recently written two statements in support of student success that I would like to share with you.

Last spring, we crafted an updated Mission Statement, endorsed by our BCTC Board of Directors.  It has also been approved by our system board, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System Board of Regents. It reads:

Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) transforms the Bluegrass Region—one student, one employer, and one community at a time.  With students at the heart of our mission, BCTC supports student access, success, and completion of educational goals through comprehensive services, high-quality career and technical education for workforce skills, transfer education for baccalaureate degrees, and life skills development.

BCTC promotes cultural awareness and inclusion, critical thinking, and civic responsibility.  Through excellence in teaching and learning and strong partnerships, BCTC supports regional economic vitality and quality of life as a member college of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System awarding associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates.

A recent political and policy discussion prompted the second statement.  It is related to the national debate on immigration, and particularly the decision by President Donald Trump to rescind the Obama-era decision on non-deportation of young people brought to the US who meet certain standards and requirements.  Many of these students are in higher education or are young working professionals.  Many colleges have taken a strong stand to assist students who need to make short-term decisions on their future.  I have issued the following statement in support of BCTC students:

Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) is committed to providing the best career, technical, and transfer education to all who are prepared to learn and to contribute to their own and their communities’ success.  BCTC serves a diverse student population who come to us from many different life circumstances.  We will continue to support our students within applicable legal or policy changes that may come.  Students who have been protected under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) are contributing to a vital college culture at BCTC.  They are not supported with any government-based financial assistance.

We urge our Congressional leaders to act in the best interests of our country and its current and potential workforce.  We urge them to work together to create immigration laws and policy that will support DACA students.  Community colleges represent the educational hopes of students and families.  In serving all students, BCTC remains a welcoming and inclusive environment, celebrating and recognizing our richly diverse community of learners.
