I have written a number of times in this BLOG about the college's open and inclusive mission and climate, welcoming all who can make use of our support to reach their educational and career goals. Our resources are directed to, first, excellent academics, and second, supportive structures across the college that allow students to strive to be their best selves.

Last Monday, August 21, I was at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah. An exciting day lay ahead. I was gratified to be with the BCTC "NASA Balloon Satellite Team," participating in the Kentucky Space Grant Consortium, as they readied and launched their high-altitude, helium-filled balloon.

Once again we find ourselves in America reading about tragic violence at the hands of people in our country who do not respect others or who maintain a narrow and bigoted view of the world. We know that we are in a hyper-polarized political environment. We know that to try to understand we need to listen to the views of others. We also need to carefully consider what we individually and collectively stand for.

We are moving quickly toward the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year. It is an exciting time, and at BCTC, we can feel the energy and anticipation of new students starting their college life. We are excited to have them join the BCTC Family.

I recently was on a flight from Detroit to Lexington. This was the result of a cancelled flight the night before and had resulted in a scramble for a hotel room and rebooked flights for the next day.

I like to read. I read professional journals, fiction and non-fiction books, newspapers, essays, articles, magazines, BLOGS, tweets, postings, and comments. I listen to webinars, conference calls, presentations, and speeches. I listen to news and commentary. You get the picture.

The Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship Program is an exciting opportunity for people who want to get trained quickly for high wage, high demand careers. The program was approved as part of the 2016-18 Commonwealth budget and is currently operating under an Executive Order from Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin.

On May 7 this year, we will hold Commencement for the 2017 graduating class of BCTC. It is my favorite time of year. I am struck each year with the dual meaning of that word. “Commencement” is used to denote a graduation or degree-completion ceremony, and also the opposite, a beginning.

At BCTC, we have begun a new initiative based on the research and strategies offered in The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling, and published by FranklinCovey in 2012.
