Since I became politically aware in the 1970s, I have admired Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter. You don't have to be a member of a specific political party to know these are people who have committed their lives to serving their family, their community, their country, and their world.

One of the most important parts of the mission of community colleges is to increase access to higher education for a broader set of adult learners. Community colleges are unique to the United States and reflect the belief of most Americans that everyone can lift themselves up with a little help from our public education systems. No matter how a person starts out in life or at what point he or she understands the necessity for getting higher education or training, anyone can come to BCTC and colleges like us all around the country and get the help they need.

BCTC folks have happily settled in and began classes for Spring 2018 in the new Science Education Center at the Newtown Campus. Last January we moved into the Advanced Manufacturing Center at the Georgetown-Scott County Campus and began classes in that great new training space. New opportunities for STEM careers abound at BCTC!

A new study was recently released that addresses a common myth about community colleges. Data, about anything, is meant to tell a story. The data collected and reported by the federal government for many years has suggested that community colleges do not have sufficient student success.

I recently came across a website: that got me thinking. These days so many things get me thinking - some of them are negative occurrences or bad news that can make me despair about the state of the world. But laughter, at the appropriate time and place, can help set the world right again, at least for a little while.

Today we are talking about smoke detectors. Home safety specialists suggest changing all your home's smoke alarm batteries the same time each year. Clearly it is a good idea to have them and to keep them in good working order.

I have written a number of times in this BLOG about the college's open and inclusive mission and climate, welcoming all who can make use of our support to reach their educational and career goals. Our resources are directed to, first, excellent academics, and second, supportive structures across the college that allow students to strive to be their best selves.

Last Monday, August 21, I was at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah. An exciting day lay ahead. I was gratified to be with the BCTC "NASA Balloon Satellite Team," participating in the Kentucky Space Grant Consortium, as they readied and launched their high-altitude, helium-filled balloon.

Once again we find ourselves in America reading about tragic violence at the hands of people in our country who do not respect others or who maintain a narrow and bigoted view of the world. We know that we are in a hyper-polarized political environment. We know that to try to understand we need to listen to the views of others. We also need to carefully consider what we individually and collectively stand for.
