Inside and Out

BCTC Alliance: Inside and Out Program Schedule
October 7 - 11, 2013

The Inside and Out program is a new initiative within the college that will coincide with the National Coming Out Day, 2013. The program, organized by the BCTC Alliance organization, will offer a week of events geared towards educating the BCTC community through promotion, awareness and training related to fostering an inclusive and safe environment for LGBTQIA staff, faculty and students.

The program will be held October 7-11, 2013. Descriptions of the events can be found on the schedule, below:

Activities include the following:

Essay Writing Contest

  • Individuals will be asked to write a personal essay on what it means to be in the LGBTQIA community, how they deal with barriers, how/why BCTC should provide a welcome environment, and/or why being an ally is important.
  • Open to all BCTC students
  • BCTC faculty and staff will judge the contest
  • Academic scholarships will be offered to the winners

LGBTQIA Open Mic - Speak OUT

  • Students, faculty and staff will be asked to talk about their experiences: coming out, supporting someone coming out, becoming an ally, what it s like to live in the LGBTQIA community, etc.
  • The essay winners will be announced

Community Information Fair

A Community Information Fair will be hosted to provide a wealth of diverse information. Invited participants include:

Speaker Series

  • Prominent leaders/individuals will speak about LGBTQIA issues. Topics may include: what it means to be out, creating family, how to be an ally, dealing with exclusion, legal issues, etc.

Safe Space Training

  • BCTC Alliance will provide a Safe Space Training workshop to provide education that encourages faculty and staff to become allies and to provide a safe space for the LGBTQIA community. For more information about Safe Space visit:
  • The workshop will be offered for BCTC staff and faculty and all materials, certificates, office posters will be provided to participants. There will be three opportunities to attend.

Movie Night

  • BCTC Alliance will host a free movie night, open to the BCTC community. Films will relate to the LGBTQIA community.
