Meet the 2019 Bluegrass Community and Technical College Presidential Student Ambassadors!

The BCTC Presidential Student Ambassadors are an honorary group of students selected to represent the college at special events on campus and in the community. Our mission is to serve as positive role models to help new and prospective students feel connected to the community college, build awareness of college services and programs, and cultivate relationships within the community while promoting goodwill and integrity.

Why I came to Bluegrass Community and Technical College
After a great deal of research, I came to the conclusion that even though I plan to pursue a 4 year degree and beyond, BCTC was the best choice for my first two years. I made the right choice! The level of instruction I have received has been top-notch, from actual professors and not graduate assistants, class sizes have been small, and scheduling has been extremely convenient. As an added bonus, attending BCTC has saved me quite a bit of money compared to other options, and that is money I can now put toward continuing further education.

Organizations I'm apart of on campus
Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government Association

There are so many things I love about being a student at BCTC, but I think my favorite thing is being able to interact with such a diverse and dedicated student body.

Why I came to Bluegrass Community and Technical College
I decided to continue my academic career at BCTC because of the smaller class sizes that allows for a comfortable transition into college.  I also chose BCTC because of the amazing relationships that you make with classmates and professors. Also, I chose BCTC because of the affordable tuition and the student involvement opportunities.

Organizations I'm apart of on campus
I am a part of the Presidential Student Ambassador Program, Phi Theta Kappa, and Student Government, where I am the senator of the Leestown Campus.

Favorite thing about being a student at BCTC
My favorite thing about being a student at BCTC is the student involvement opportunities and the endless help the college provides. The help includes free tutoring for all subjects and all students also many opportunities to get involved with the college such as different clubs and organizations.

Why I came to Bluegrass Community and Technical College
Convenience and far cheaper than being considered out of state for any other college here. I came here to get some credits and transfer out; I stayed because of the community and feel of the school, also excellent professors.

Organizations I'm apart of on campus
Senator of Newtown Campus SGA, meetings open to all students, Phi Theta Kappa, Tutor for Math and Philosophy.

Favorite thing about being a student at BCTC
The closeness with my peers. I don't think I would've been able to form certain bonds if it wasn't a small school with small class sizes. In addition the small class sizes allow you to form bonds with your professors, and if you have a problem they are very willing to help. Academics are my number 1 priority and I found help when I put forth the effort to ask. In addition, with the support of my professors and mentors I found organizations that I love, a job that pays well and is rewarding (Tutoring), and found a passion for statistics I didn't know I had. Overall my experience here has been very rewarding and I am very glad I attended and kept an open mind.

Plans after graduating BCTC
Going back to UK then, hopefully, UK medical school.

Dream Career
Child Psychiatrist :) An obtainable dream with hard work.

Favorite class I've taken
Statistics 296 W/ Kara Cook, super fun if you're into math.

Why I came to Bluegrass Community and Technical College
I chose Bluegrass Community & Technical College because BCTC cares. With their small class sizes (boasting an impressive 16:1 student-teacher ratio), Bluegrass provides a top-notch education at a fraction of the cost of most universities. With a variety of degrees and programs offered, and the plethora of transfer options at the transfer center, Bluegrass opens the door to seemingly endless opportunities. Making the decision to go back to school can be intimidating, but I am finally facing my fears and living a dream here at Bluegrass. I chose BCTC because the staff cares, the sense of community is diverse and rich with opportunity, and because the college has touched so many lives. It has been one of the best decisions of my life.

Organizations I'm apart of on campus
I enjoy being an active member of organizations on campus at Bluegrass. Last semester I was elected student body Co-President of the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS). I am the first Bluegrass CTC student to be elected to this prestigious position. With this title, I also serve as a student regent on the KCTCS Board of Regents. In addition, I am the current Bluegrass Community & Technical College Student Government Association President, and the President of Alpha Phi Kappa-- the Bluegrass chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Further, I was selected to serve under the college president as a Presidential Student Ambassador. I am also a founding member and was instrumental in the formation of an LGBTQIA+ Allies support group student organization on campus. I am also a member of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) business society for collegiate scholars. I also participant in the Student Support Services (SSS/TRIO) program, in which I am a part-time tutor.

Favorite thing about being a student at BCTC
I chose BCTC because of the campus atmosphere-- I wanted a college experience. My favorite part of being a Bluegrass Community & Technical college student is the inclusive environment on campus. As a non-traditional student, the diversity of Bluegrass’ demographics, and the staggered age ranges of the student population made my transition returning to school less stressful. Bluegrass encompasses the ultimate college experience with its close relationship to the University of Kentucky. The Bluegrass CTC Campus life is vibrant with academic, athletic, and social activities. With UK’s BLUE+ transfer program it’s easy for students to transfer to UK.  You can participate in UK’s Plus Dining Account, access the UK Athletics facilities and W.T. Young Library, and have opportunities to march with the University of Kentucky Marching Band, or reside in the UK residence halls.

Plans after graduating BCTC
Post-graduation, I plan to transfer to the University of Kentucky, and work towards earning my bachelor degree in education.

Dream Career
College President, and Private Business Owner (I want to own and operate a hotel, restaurant combo--or a bed and breakfast). In essence, I aspire to become an advocator, educator, entrepreneur & philanthropist.

Why I came to Bluegrass Community and Technical College
In the fall of 2017, a series of little tragedies had left me down on my luck and without much hope when it came to furthering my education. I could either go to BCTC, or take a chance on taking time off after high school and potentially never coming back to the world of higher education. Luckily I chose to come to BCTC, and after taking several classes that I loved and getting involved, I have come to cherish my time here. I would recommend that anyone pursuing a college degree start here first.

Organizations I'm apart of on campus
Aside from being a Presidential Student Ambassador, I am the secretary of our Student Government Association, I'm in Phi Theta Kappa, and I am participating in the Legislative Internship program in the 2019 legislative session.

Favorite thing about being a student at BCTC
My favorite thing about being a BCTC student is all of the people that I have gotten to meet. Here at Bluegrass, there are students from all walks of life. From first generation college students to adults seeking a second degree, everyone here is different and enlivens the campus with the diversity of their perspective. We are all here to better ourselves and further our education, and it is truly a very inspiring thing to be a part of.

Plans after graduating BCTC
After graduating from BCTC, my plan is to transfer to a four year university and double major in English and History.

Dream Career
My dream career is to work in church ministry while maintaining some type of writing career on the side.

As a first generation American, BCTC helped me to not feel scared about college and gave me the confidence to be open about where my family is from and not feel judged.
