  • Now that you have selected a topic, developed a thesis statement, and collected your research, you are ready to move on to one of the next steps in the process writing an outline.
  • An outline is a visual aid to help you see the organization of your paper. Outlines can be very useful for showing the relationships among ideas in your writing. For short papers a few informal notes written down in the order you plan to write about them may be enough. However, longer and more complex papers often benefit from a systematic outline to organize the various parts of the paper, with main points and subpoints listed.
