The summer before your student heads to college is a busy time. There may be a Freshman Orientation for your student, and for you. Parents are encouraged, but not required, to attend Summer Orientation with their student. Parent Orientation will introduce parents to the values, goals, and practices of BCTC. Parents will meet and interact with administrators, faculty, staff, and the Presidential Student Ambassadors. Although the student and parent programs are held on the same dates, most sessions are conducted separately.
Amid the entire flurry of preparations for leaving, there are some important decisions that you and your college student should make to anticipate potential issues later on. If you spend some time this summer agreeing on these points, you won’t be taken by surprise when inevitable situations arise later. You’ll know that you and your student are “on the same page”, and you may prevent difficulties later.
Here are a few things to discuss with your student before they leave.
Remember that Family Education Rights and Privacy Act regulations mean that all financial and academic information about your student’s college experience will go directly to your student. Be sure to discuss early on whether you expect your student to share their grades with you. Discuss whether you expect certain grades or a certain GPA and what you will do if these expectations are not met.

Federal Regulations mandate KCTCS modify its Satisfactory Academic Policy to hold students to a higher level of accountability. At the end of the academic term all students will be reevaluated to determine if they meet the new Federal requirements for Title IV Financial Aid. An evaluation will give students who have not met the SAP standards in the past, an opportunity to improve their academic standing by first placing them into a warning status. Each student is required to meet the three criteria listed below.
If a student fails to meet any or all of the conditions, an email notice will be sent to their KCTCS email account after the fall, spring and summer semesters. After the evaluation of their grades and or academic performance when their first semester ends. Your student could be placed on warning during the spring semester 2016. Although you hope that your student will not have any difficulties or receive an academic warning or academic probation, do you have a plan if that should happen? Talking about these issues now may prevent concerns about having important conversations later. There will still be bumps in the road, but you may be able to minimize them and you will have opened many important lines of communication.
In the summer of 2015 BCTC opened a brand new First Year Center on the Cooper Campus in Oswald room 310. The center focuses on the success of brand new students at BCTC. Qualified staff are available to answer questions and assist students with a variety of issues. The Center also has upper classmen peer mentors and state-of-art technology to assist students with studying, working on projects, and developing their college survival skills. The FYC supports students to make their first year at college as enjoyable and successful as possible. This interactive course will help students learn strategies that promote academic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal success at Bluegrass Community and Technical College. Your student will be part of a diverse community engaging in curricular and co-curricular life of the college, they will participate in opportunities to develop academic plans which will align with their career and life goals.

Students with a disability who require academic accommodations or other assistance should contact Disability Support Services (DSS) for an appointment as soon as possible to discuss documentation requirements, reasonable accommodations, and procedures for notifying instructors. Services are voluntary and based on the individual need of each student. Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), 504 Plans, or Transition Plans from high school provide a history of accommodation and effective interventions but often are not sufficient to document a disability in college.
