Step 3: Write a Working Thesis

Writing a Thesis Statement

  • A thesis statement is a one or two-sentence condensation of the argument or analysis that is contained in your paper.
  • Developing an initial thesis statement can help you when researching and writing your paper by helping you stay on track. You may need to modify your initial thesis statement as your research progresses, but in its final form your thesis statement should reflect the overall purpose and essence of your paper.
  • Thesis statements often are included in the first paragraph of a paper, so that instructor knows what you intend to write about in the rest of the paper.
  • Go to How to Write a Thesis Statement for useful suggestions on how to develop an effective thesis statement for your paper.
