BCTC offers NARA Summer Racehorse Riding Program
Published on Mar 21, 2019
This summer, the North American Racing Academy (NARA) at Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) will offer two racehorse riding classes designed to introduce riders of different experience levels to racehorse riding techniques. This is the first time these courses have been offered in summer sessions.
Racehorse Riding Skills I (EQS 112) introduces students to basic racehorse riding. Participants will learn what it takes to become a professional exercise rider and/or jockey, including physical, mental and emotional demands. Students enrolled in EQS 112 will be required to complete labor-intensive, physical fitness tasks and should be aware that their physical ability will impact their success in this course. Classes will be held May 20 - June 28, Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Students must successfully complete EQS 112 with instructor consent to be enrolled in the next level course, Racehorse Riding Skills II (EQS 113). This course further develops the skills learned in EQS 112 by applying principles of riding racehorses in daily exercise sessions on the racetrack, according to trainer instructions, as well as understanding and following racetrack rules and etiquette. Classes will be held July 1 - Aug. 8, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Classes and assessment will be physically demanding. However, prior riding experience is NOT required.
To be considered for either class, applicants must successfully complete the pre-enrollment assessment Friday, Mar. 29, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. or Friday, Apr. 26, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. If a participant does not pass on the first session, he/she is welcome to try again during the second session.
The pre-enrollment assessment and both classes will take place at the Thoroughbred Training Center, Barn 30, 3380 Paris Pike, Lexington. Transportation and housing for students is NOT provided. Studentsmust be at least 16 years of age. Standard 2019 BCTC tuition and fees apply.
