BCTC Begins Construction of Newtown Campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 15, 2011) Bluegrass Community and Technical College celebrated a milestone Monday when the college broke ground on its first building at the Newtown Campus.

The 92,240-square-foot, four-story classroom building will house eleven academic programs, including high-wage, high-demand programs such as Computer Information Technology. The building will accommodate approximately 1,000 students and will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified, meeting the highest green building and performance measures.

The BCTC Newtown Campus has to be one of the most exciting developments in the colleges history, said BCTC President, Dr. Augusta A. Julian. This is an unprecedented opportunity to help transform a neighborhood, a city, and a region. We have so many partners to thank for this start to becoming a brand new, vibrant, state-of-the-art, urban community college campus.

BCTC's move to the historical Eastern State Hospital campus is the result of an innovative partnership among the state, Lexington, the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Eastern State Hospital is building a new facility on UKs Coldstream Research Campus.

This groundbreaking for the Bluegrass Community and Technical College Newtown Campus is a WIN-WIN for all parties involved, said Kentucky Community and Technical College System President Michael B. McCall. It will provide individuals in an underserved area of Lexington with access to a major postsecondary education campus that will deliver educational opportunities to prepare them for transfer to a university and equip them with the skills they need to find jobs in high wage, high demand professions.

The college unveiled the 20-year master plan for the campus in May 2010. The Newtown Campus is located at the former 48-acre site of the historic Eastern State Hospital. The master plan is divided into four phases and includes renovation of historically significant buildings for adaptive use. At completion, the campus will have between 14 to 17 buildings on site.

This new four-story building will enhance educational opportunities and administrative services at the Newtown campus for students, faculty and employees, Governor Beshear said. Dr. McCall and President Julian are to be congratulated for yet another outstanding facility in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

The construction manager is Congleton-Hacker Company. The $28.3 million building is scheduled to be ready for Spring 2013.
