BCTC focuses on needs of military veterans with new hire
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 12, 2010) -- Bluegrass Community and Technical College recently hired a Veteran Resources Coordinator to address the needs of the growing student population who are active military or veterans.
Veteran Resources Coordinator Alex DeSha, who is based at the Leestown Campus, will provide academic advising, career guidance and student support services to military students and prospective students. He will serve as a liaison for veterans to coordinate with Veteran Affairs, the Veterans Center, University of Kentucky student veterans group, and other services in the community.
It is my goal to be a one-stop source for military students and their families to provide them with the resources necessary for a successful and enjoyable academic experience at BCTC, said DeSha, who has been a member of the Kentucky National Guard since 2002 and served overseas in Iraq in 2006-07. I will help foster a smooth transition from combat to college.
An estimated 338 students who are active military, veterans or dependents of veterans are enrolled at BCTC for the fall 2010 semester. Students using veteran benefits are expected to rise with the expansion of the federal G.I. Bill benefits that make it easier for military and veterans to attend college.
DeSha plans to create a Student Veterans of America Club and Veterans Services Advisory Group. Both groups aim to facilitate the enhancement and expansion of services for military and veterans at BCTC.
DeSha graduated from the University of Kentucky in May 2010 with a degree in human geography.
Students who are active military or veterans are encouraged to contact Desha for more information about services at BCTC. Alex Desha can be reached at (859) 246-6820 or email email@example.com
