BCTC-NARAs Remi Bellocq Named USA Representative in Newly Formed International Federation of Horse Racing Academies
Remi Bellocq, executive Director of the North American Racing Academy (NARA) and Equine Studies at Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC), has been named the United States representative member of the newly formed International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA), a body that will be headquartered in Abu Dhabi.
The IFHRA was founded by His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who wished to create a federation that would nurture and give positive direction through coordinating efforts to help steer aspiring jockeys through the professional world of flat racing.
Countries participating at the inaugural IFHRA Board meeting included: The United Arab Emirates, France, the United States, Australia, Great Britain, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Germany, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Italy, Turkey and Puerto Rico.
The first goal IFHRA would like to accomplish is the creation of an international Student Exchange Program for 2015. Factors being considered are 1.) Number of exchange students per school; 2.) Cost of travel, room and board for students; 3.) The selection process for host trainers and 4.) Application requirements for students.
Bellocq said, As one whos riding skills and overall horsemanship benefitted from international competition, I believe that IFHRA and our planned student exchange program will provide BCTC-NARA students with similar opportunities to enhance their training and education. To date, weve had students travel to Abu Dhabi, France, Great Britain and Holland. And, each time theyve returned as better riders, horsemen and far more culturally diverse."
As part of the planned exchange program, BCTC-NARA will be able to send two qualified students each year overseas for a 3-4 month mentorship for which all expenses will be paid. Likewise, BCTC-NARA will provide mentorship opportunities to international students who want to come to the United States.
Recently in Abu Dhabi, Bellocq served as a guest panelist at the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak International Conference of Education and Training, part of the One World, 6 Continents HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival.
I spoke about how BCTC-NARA isstructured and howour approach comes more from an overall Workforce Training perspective as opposed to being strictly a jockey school, said Bellocq. So in addition to riders, we also train grooms, assistant trainers, breeding farm workers while also providing students with insight into other areas of racing, like track management and regulation. The other unique thing we provide, that many of the other overseas racing schools dont is college-level credit that the student can then use, in the future, to further pursue their education if they so choose.
