Governor Steve Beshear and Congressman Andy Barr presented the LEED award to Dr. Augusta A. Julian, President of BCTC, at the 75th anniversary and Newtown Campus dedication ceremony Sept. 4, 2014.

"Im honored to be a part of the official dedication of BCTC's Newtown Campus and congratulate them for being awarded LEED Gold status for their numerous green building initiatives, Gov. Beshear said.

Some features of the Newtown Classroom Building that helped earn LEED Gold Certification are:

  • motion detection controlled lights and HVAC in almost all spaces
  • programmable space occupancy settings
  • ambient light sensors on lights near windows (10% energy savings in these areas)
  • heat recovery chiller for temperate days; avoids operation of main chiller and boilers
  • ventilation calculation based on monitored CO2 levels
  • lower duct static pressure design (2.4% energy savings)
  • 92% efficient domestic hot water heater
  • sun shades on key windows
  • spray foam on exterior to control infiltration
  • high performance windows (.6% energy savings)
  • R30 cool roof design
  • permeable pavement in several parking areas

The opportunity for KCTCS and BCTC to achieve a Gold Level LEED Certification on our recently opened Newtown Campus classroom building was made possible by the hard work of our design and construction teams. The energy efficient design and the many sustainability related features incorporated into the building will allow BCTC to provide a great atmosphere for our students for many years to come, said Rob Knight, BCTC Dean of Operations.

The four-story, 92,240 square foot building opened to students for the Fall 2013 semester and houses number of programs including: Film Studies: Script to Screen, Information Management and Design, Criminal Justice, Computer and Information Technologies, Business Management and Marketing, along with several others.

According to the USGBC website, the Newtown Classroom Building is one of only six Gold certified buildings in Lexington, and the first LEED certified building in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

The building was also recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the Better Buildings Challenge in the fall.
