Republic Banks We CARE Award honors volunteerism of BCTC employees

Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) was named as the 2009 winner of Republic Banks We CARE Award in the Education and Public Works category. The award was presented to the college on Sept. 22 at the Griffin Gate Marriott in Lexington.

The award recognized BCTC as a top organization who has demonstrated what CARE represents: Community Activity Recognition Enterprise. At BCTC, many faculty members incorporate community service participation in their academic curriculum or host community events at the college. Faculty and staff volunteer their time to operate the Peace Meal Gardens, a community garden located on the Leestown Campus. During the holiday season, faculty and staff donate gifts and items for children in need through the Circle of Love and Santas Kids programs. Throughout the year, faculty and staff volunteer in more than 40 local non-profit organizations, including United Way of the Bluegrass, Reforest the Bluegrass, Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program and Wig Out, an organization that was started by a BCTC faculty member who was being treated for cancer. Wig Out raises money to offset the cost of wigs for chemotherapy patients.

BCTC faculty, staff, and students are key players in both individual and community support in our region, said college President Dr. Augusta Julian. We appreciate Republic Bank's recognition of corporate and public agencies and are proud to be recognized in this years We CARE program.

BCTC Chief Information Officer Vern Kennedy thanked college employees for donating their time and talents in behalf of the college.

This is your award in recognition of your generosity and contributions to the communities that we serve, she said.

The We CARE Award will rotate display among the regional campuses in the coming months.
