Title III Project

Substantive Reform for Closing the First Year Success Gap

Introduction

In October 2014, Bluegrass Community and Technical College was awarded a five-year Title III grant of approximately $2.2 million from the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) and the Higher Education Act. This application was funded from the 2013 list when the Department of Education continued funding down the list of applications. The focus of BCTC’s Title III grant-Substantive Reform for Closing the First Year Success Gap is to develop activities to increase first year to second year retention and academic success. The college-wide reform strategies-academic and nonacademic enhancements include: redesign of developmental education curriculum with accelerated and linked courses, development of a structured, high impact First Year program and redesigned learning environments.

What is Title III?

The purpose of the Title III Strengthening Institutions Program is to provide grants to eligible institutions of higher education to improve their academic programs, institutional management, and fiscal stability in order to increase their self-sufficiency and strengthen their capacity to make a substantial contribution to the higher education resources of the nation. (34 CFR 607.1)

How does Title III benefit BCTC?

Through the Title III grant, BCTC aims to implement college-wide reform strategies; academic and nonacademic enhancements that can make postsecondary education an attainable goal for the Bluegrass region.
