A Very Different Place

I recently came across an article I had saved from 2013. It is a set of social and economic changes predicted by 2020 and was written by Rob Rawson of Staff.com. The most startling item, from my perspective, is his prediction that most of the world’s universities have gone out of business. Now, I do think he was being dramatic, and I do not think this is happening as he predicted, but his rationale for the prediction is frighteningly sound: competition from free online resources and lack of appreciation for formal education.

Learn something every day

Almost every month, the 16 presidents of colleges in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, of which BCTC is a part, meet to discuss the weighty issues that college presidents deal with day-to-day, and the thousand or so decisions that must be made each month. Then once a year, we meet to think more carefully and strategically about what we do and why and how. It has always been fun for me to learn in a group with others who challenge you to listen carefully and see differently.

Seek First to Understand

Since I became politically aware in the 1970s, I have admired Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter. You don't have to be a member of a specific political party to know these are people who have committed their lives to serving their family, their community, their country, and their world.

Carry students as far as they can go

One of the most important parts of the mission of community colleges is to increase access to higher education for a broader set of adult learners. Community colleges are unique to the United States and reflect the belief of most Americans that everyone can lift themselves up with a little help from our public education systems. No matter how a person starts out in life or at what point he or she understands the necessity for getting higher education or training, anyone can come to BCTC and colleges like us all around the country and get the help they need.

Hope can help keep us going

BCTC folks have happily settled in and began classes for Spring 2018 in the new Science Education Center at the Newtown Campus. Last January we moved into the Advanced Manufacturing Center at the Georgetown-Scott County Campus and began classes in that great new training space. New opportunities for STEM careers abound at BCTC!
