Biography

Von Smith received his Bachelor’s in Science in Marketing Research from Knoxville College in 1997; this degree was then followed by a Master’s in Business Administration in Sports Management with an emphasis on Sports Law from Midway University. Currently, Von is a doctoral candidate with the University of Dayton, en route to obtaining his Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in Organizational Leadership.

From 1998-1999, Von served as the Dean of Students of Knoxville College’s Family Life Center for At-Risk Youth. From 2001-2015, he was the Head Track & Field Coach and an advisor for Kentucky State University. In 2016, he was a credit recovery teacher for Frankfort Independent schools, lasting until 2017. In 2023, Von joined the Bluegrass Community & Technical College family as the Student Engagement & Transitions Coach in the Dual Credit department.

Services

Application & Enrollment

  • Guiding high school students in the BCTC application process
  • Preparing students in the application and use of varying necessary documents for enrollment (e.g. the Dual Credit Application, enrollment in BCTC, accessibility forms)

Student Services

  • Introducing and guiding high school students to the services available for them as BCTC students, both on campus and online
  • Educating students of BCTC financial offerings and scholarships
  • Connecting dual credit students with on-campus organizations that are engaging and supportive
  • Connecting dual credit students with appropriate resources for needs outside the scope of the dual credit department (e.g. library services, accessibility services, Title IX, etc.)
  • Providing engaging and educational events throughout the semester to keep students engaged and connected
  • Advocating for students in various situations and acting as a supportive voice during times of need or hardship

Advising

  • Encouraging and mentoring student academic success through bi-weekly meetings
  • Assisting students in the creation of an academic plan that includes and emphasizes transition into BCTC enrollment or enrollment at a four-year institution
