BCTC offers Mental Health First Aid course

LEXINGTON, KY - Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) realizes mental well-being and good mental health are of critical importance, both at home and in the workplace. In response to challenges created by the pandemic, BCTC Workforce Solutions is offering an 8-hour mental health course in March 2021.
The Mental Health First Aid course is designed to give participants skills to identify and help persons who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Participants will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health concerns including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders and self-injury. Youth Mental Health First Aid also addresses eating disorders, ADHD and disruptive behaviors. They will learn strategies to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations develop a 5-step action plan and connect with appropriate professional help when needed.
Participants will also learn more about the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. They will have the opportunity to assess personal views and feelings about mental health problems and play a role in reducing negative attitudes in communities.
The next class will be held Thursday, March 18, and Friday, March 19, 1:00-5:00 p.m. at the BCTC Leestown Campus, 164 Opportunity Way, Lexington, in Building M, room 145. Social distancing and Healthy at BCTC protocols will be followed. The early bird cost is $150 per person; after March 11, the cost is $200. Course fee includes the textbook.
