The SIP grant aims to enhance the ability of higher education institutions to support low-income students. It does this by funding initiatives that improve academic quality, strengthen institutional management, and ensure fiscal stability. This support helps create a more equitable educational environment and enhances the overall student experience. By focusing on these key areas, the grant facilitates the development of programs and resources that can lead to better outcomes for underserved populations.

BCTC is pleased to announce the award of the SIP Title III Grant from the U.S. Department of Education, and this 5-year grant will support the following:

  • Establishment of a Career Services Center on campus with a staff of professional career advisors supported by administrative and data analysis personnel under the guidance of a director.
  • Transformation of student advising so that knowledge of careers is integrated, and faculty and staff advisors collaborate to support student engagement with career exploration.
  • Creation of career advising materials appropriate to BCTC’s degree programs and accessible to students via the creation of blackboard shells devoted to individual career pathway. These materials include career pathway plans that inform students about key courses, milestone and employment/career options associated with each plan.

“Career Services is beyond grateful to be receiving this grant as it will allow us to meet students where they are and improve the way in which we deliver our services to the BCTC community,” said Dr. Tracy Spotts. Dr. Spotts, Director of Career Services and Work-based Learning will serve as the Principal Investigator. The process for implementing this program will begin immediately and will have an instant impact on how BCTC serves students.

Dr. Greg Feeney, BCTC President/CEO, emphasized the importance of establishing a Career Center as a key resource for low-income students in their career development and job search. “By fostering collaboration among advising, faculty, and career exploration, the Center aims to enhance the overall student experience and better prepare them for their future careers. With these funds, BCTC plans to expand existing services and focus on empowering students to make informed career choices, ensuring they are ready to enter the workforce upon completing their education.”
