Lexington, KY – Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) will participate in the Kentucky Coalition for Responsible Alcohol and Substance Misuse Education (RASME) Coalition of colleges and universities across the state focused on reducing underage drinking and impaired driving among college students.
The three-year, $1 million pilot program is modeled after successful, established versions in other states and will work with participating schools to implement a holistic well-being initiative centered on education and harm reduction strategies while providing support to ensure consistency and accountability.
The founding Coalition members include Bellarmine University, Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Berea College, Centre College, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College, Kentucky State University, Northern Kentucky University, Midway University, Morehead State University, Murray State University, Transylvania University, University of Kentucky, and University of Louisville.
"Any focused initiatives we implement to help a specific group of students succeed, not only in college but in life overall, are important," said Anita Nelums, Director of Counseling Services. "We are eager to join the Coalition to gain new strategies and access resources that can educate and eliminate barriers for our campus community, ultimately benefiting the broader community as well."
"I am incredibly proud that BCTC is part of this Coalition," said Dr. Greg Feeney, President/CEO of BCTC. "Our mission is centered on the success, safety, and well-being of our students. The funding for this pilot program is crucial in helping us educate and support students as they navigate challenges related to alcohol. Other states have set a strong precedent, and I hope we can adopt effective strategies that promote student success."
