BCTC Launches Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to Support Students in Need
Published on Oct 27, 2025
Lexington, KY — As Thanksgiving approaches, Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) is once
again calling on the generosity of Kentuckians to support its annual Thanksgiving
Food Drive, benefiting BCTC students and their families facing food insecurity.
Donations will be accepted through October 31, and Thanksgiving baskets will be distributed to students between November 10–14. The drive is coordinated by The HEART of BCTC, the college’s food pantry, which serves as a vital resource for students in need.
"The HEART of BCTC is a shining example of what we can accomplish when our community comes together with compassion and purpose," said Dr. Greg Feeney, BCTC President/CEO. "We are proud to support our students beyond the classroom. A warm Thanksgiving meal can provide not just nourishment but hope and that’s something every student deserves."
So far in 2025, BCTC has seen a significant increase in student need. As of October 22, the HEART pantry has already served 358 students, a substantial rise compared to this time last year.
Suggested Thanksgiving basket donations include:
- Stuffing mix
- Cranberry sauce
- Canned corn and green beans
- Dinner rolls or cornbread
- Instant mashed potatoes
- Frozen turkey breasts
- Eggs and butter
- Cake mix and icing
- Boxed macaroni
The need is great: a Trellis Research study from last year revealed that 48% of KCTCS students who responded were food insecure, 48% faced housing insecurity, and 45% were parents. Organizers point out that around one in six Kentuckians experience food insecurity, with nearly 16% uncertain about their next meal.
“The HEART Food Pantry truly is the heart of our college. It’s where compassion meets action, ensuring every student has the support they need to learn, grow, and succeed. The HEART is more than a resource; it’s a commitment. We’re dedicated to providing the essentials our students need to thrive in and beyond the classroom,” said Kauai Thurman, Associate Dean of Student Success Services.
