BCTC Reports 22.2% Growth in Dual Credit Enrollment

Over 4,200 high school students are fast-tracking their future, and saving time and money

Lexington, KY — The Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) is celebrating Dual Credit Week, April 14–18, with more than 4,200 of high school students enrolled in dual credit courses during the Fall 2024 semester, a 22.2% increase over the previous fall.

These students collectively saved $3.7 million on tuition. Additionally, BCTC reports that 3,241 accounts received the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) Dual Credit Scholarship and the Kentucky Dual Credit Work Ready Scholarship, amounting to a total of $2,145,177.50. Together, they have completed 39,479 credit hours in 499 dual credit courses, giving them a solid foundation for their future success. BCTC has 3,348 dual credit students enrolled this spring semester which reflects a 2.4% increase.

As the area’s largest provider of dual credit, BCTC continues to expand access to affordable, college-level coursework for high school students, empowering them to save time, reduce tuition costs, and jumpstart college and careers. Dual credit classes offer college-level coursework that counts for both high school and college credit. The college also works with 100 partner high schools and 38 counties.

"With over 4,200 high school students enrolled in dual credit courses this past fall, we’re witnessing an exciting surge in students who are fast-tracking their futures,” said Dr. Greg Feeney, BCTC President/CEO.  “Not only are they gaining valuable college credit while still in high school, but they’re also saving time and money. This growth is a clear testament to the success of our dual credit programs and our strong partnerships, all of which continue to empower students, families, and the workforce,” said Feeney.

The state’s investment in two dual credit scholarships has fueled this enrollment growth. The Dual Credit Scholarship currently covers two general education courses each year for juniors and seniors for a total of four scholarships for each student.

The Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship covers two technical education classes each year for four years of high school for a total of eight classes. Additional dual credit classes are offered at half the standard rate of KCTCS tuition.

Cassi Lowe

Cassi Lowe, a 17-year-old senior at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, will graduate in May with an associate degree from Bluegrass Community and Technical College before she graduates later in the month from high school.

Set to pursue civil engineering at the University of Kentucky this fall, Lowe credits the pre-engineering pathway between BCTC and UK for giving her such a strong start.

“BCTC has been a great experience, and it has given me a head start in college,” she said. “The experience has taught me time management, and I am more prepared to make a smooth transition to UK.”

Her advice to other students? “Definitely do it!”
