Bluegrass Community and Technical College Hosts Green Dot Bystander Intervention Training

LEXINGTON, KY — Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) will host its annual Green Dot
Bystander Intervention Training on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 9:30–11:00 a.m.
in SEC Room 207, reinforcing the College’s ongoing commitment to campus safety and
violence prevention.
Green Dot is a nationally recognized, evidence-based violence prevention strategy designed to reduce power-based personal violence, including sexual violence, intimate partner violence, child abuse, elder abuse, bullying, and stalking. The program encourages all community members to recognize their role as active bystanders and equips them with practical tools to safely intervene and help shift social and cultural norms that allow violence to occur.
“Maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment is foundational to student success,” said Dr. Greg Feeney, President and CEO of BCTC. “The Green Dot Bystander Intervention program empowers our faculty, staff, and students to look out for one another and to take meaningful, proactive steps to prevent violence. This training reflects our shared responsibility to foster a campus culture rooted in respect, accountability, and care.”
The Green Dot program teaches participants how to recognize situations that could lead to harm and provides strategies for intervention that are realistic, manageable, and safe. These actions, known as “green dots”, are small but powerful behaviors that demonstrate intolerance for violence and contribute to a safer campus community.
This session marks BCTC’s second Green Dot training offered to faculty, staff, and students.
“We are encouraged by the strong engagement we’ve seen across campus,” said Anita Nelums, Director of Counseling at BCTC. “This annual training builds on our momentum and reflects our commitment to equipping our community with the skills and confidence to intervene, support one another, and prevent violence before it happens.”
Originally introduced in 2011 at Washington University, Green Dot has since been implemented nationwide as a proactive approach to campus safety and violence prevention. By viewing all community members as potential active bystanders, the program strengthens collective responsibility and promotes lasting cultural change.
