BCTC Early Childhood Education Center Awarded Kentucky Division of Waste Management Grant
LEXINGTON, KY (April 23, 2007) Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) Winchester-Clark County Campus Early Childhood Development Center, is the recipient of a Waste Tire Crumb Grant from the Kentucky Division of Waste Management.
The five thousand dollar grant will fund the purchase of recycled tire crumbs to create a safe surface for the playground on the new campus. Waste tire crumbs are the preferred surface for playgrounds as they reduce injuries, and unlike wood mulch, decrease mold and allergens that effect children. BCTC Instructor Claude Gross and his carpentry students will use the thirty-four thousand pounds of recycled tire crumbs to create a safe surface for the playground.
The plan is to build a state of the art, developmentally appropriate playground that will meet the needs of children and the community as well as our students, said Kelli Kinkade, BCTC Early Childhood Education Coordinator, who spearheaded the grant proposal.
The Center will serve children from infancy to five years and serve as a real world-training site for early childhood education students. The new twenty-four thousand square foot Winchester- Clark County Campus is scheduled to open in November of 2007.
