BCTC formalizes exchange program with Chinese university

image LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 22, 2010) Bluegrass Community and Technical College and officials from Shandong Jiaotong University in China have established an exchange program where students and faculty from both colleges can spend six to 12 months studying or teaching abroad.

BCTC President Dr. Augusta A. Julian and officials from Shandong Jiaotong University signed the agreement Monday, Nov. 15.

"This agreement is the beginning of a long relationship with a major university in the Eastern part of China," said Kentucky Community and Technical College Director of China Partnerships David Wachtel. "It is a two-way agreement and we hope some of our students would be interested in going to China and study Chinese at this university." Wachtel is also a BCTC professor of sociology.

BCTC has participated in exchange programs with various universities in China since 1995, but the agreement signed Monday, Nov. 15 formalizes the exchange program between Shandong Jiaotong University and BCTC.

Shandong Jiaotong University is located in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province located in the eastern part of China. More than 25,000 students attend the university, which has a very extensive program of teaching Chinese to international students.

Students are encouraged to take the Introduction to Chinese class at BCTC (RAE 150 and 151) before participating in the exchange program, but students and faculty can still participate in the exchange program without taking the course.

At Shandong Jiatong University, students can take any class with the instructor's permission. BCTC faculty who participate in the exchange program will teach a variety of social science courses in English or English usage classes at the university.
