BCTC Hispanic Outreach Receives Grant for College Experience Camp

LEXINGTON, KY (June 19, 2007) Bluegrass Community amp; Technical College will offer its second annual College Experience Camp for Hispanic and English as a Second Language(ESL) high school students thanks to a grant awarded by the Partners for Youths Community Juvenile Justice Partnership.

Our goal is to motivate students to start dreaming about their futures by showing them that they can be successful in a college setting. We hope that the participants will be encouraged and challenged by the instruction they receive that will equip them to be successful during their last years of high school and first years of college said Erin Howard Hispanic Outreach Coordinator for Bluegrass Community amp; Technical College.

The camp for twenty- four Fayette County high school students will be held at the BCTC Cooper Campus July 30 to August 3, 2006. Students will spend the day in camp programming and remain at the college overnight in the college dorms. Programming for the camp will include small classes with volunteer professors and college student mentors providing language, math and computer skills. Local community volunteers will speak with the campers about career opportunities and the importance of remaining drug free. This years campers represent the following countries Latin America, the Philippines, Cambodia, Poland and Africa.

High school ESL teachers, youth service coordinators, and counselors are now identifying students.
