BCTC student Ebony Nava named a 2015 Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Chapter Member
Ebony Nava, a Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) student, will be honored as a 2015 Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Chapter Member at an upcoming conference. There are only 30 Phi Theta Kappa members worldwide who have been designated a Distinguished Chapter Member, and this is the fourth year in a row that BCTC's Alpha Phi Kappa chapter has received this distinction.
Nava was nominated because she excelled in all four hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship, that define what a Distinguished Chapter Member is, according to Lucinda Baker, BCTC Phi Theta Kappa faculty advisor. Nava served as Student Government President, and in 2013, she was named a Kentucky New Century Scholar and named to the USA Today All-Academic Team. Navas winning essay addressed the Alpha Phi Kappa Regalia Award for Service, a program that she created especially for the BCTC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.
"We're all so proud of Ebony. For three years, Ebony has been a valued member of our chapter here at BCTC. She has distinguished herself as a scholar and a student leader. She's been a great role model for our members and for all BCTC students," said Baker.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society which provides scholarship opportunities, as well as programs and services dedicated to excellence in academics and leadership, for students in two-year colleges. Each member must maintain a 3.5 GPA while attending college.
Distinguished Chapter Members must be nominated through the Hallmark Awards application process, and the winners were selected from 150 nominees by a panel of judges.
The awards presentation will take place at Phi Theta Kappas NerdNation 2015 convention in San Antonio, Texas, on April 16-18. NerdNation 2015 is an annual convention that provides opportunities for advisors and student engagement.
BCTC's Alpha Phi Kappa chapter was also named the 2014 Kentucky Region Most Distinguished Chapter, an International Top 100 Chapter, and is number one in the world of College Fish, a free online tool that helps students plan for successful community college completion and transfer. Many Alpha Phi Kappa members have gone on to win scholarships and transfer successfully to four-year schools.
