Lexington, KY – The Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) Equine program has partnered with the Secretariat Center Off-Track Thoroughbred Adoption Program (SC) to conduct a 3-week introductory course focusing on equine care for transitioning Veterans and their spouses.
Students will be taught this foundational course in horse care management on-site at Secretariat Center’s Kentucky Horse Park facility. The course will include hands-on instruction in basic horse care management, with students learning industry-accepted standards and techniques.
This partnership will allow transitioning Veterans and their spouses to discover employment opportunities in the Kentucky equine industry as well as the career benefits of completing the 2-year Associate of Applied Science in Equine Studies at BCTC.
"This BCTC-SC partnership will provide exceptional training to veterans wanting to pursue careers in the horse industry, “said Bill Nelson, Secretariat Center Executive Director. “The program’s goal is to get transitioning Veterans off to a “good start” by attending the Secretariat Center’s 3-week hands-on equine management course before they leave active duty.” BCTC’s Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success counselors will assist those who wish to pursue the BCTC Equine program with advising and assistance for those utilizing the GI Bill or other college-related support.
“It is wonderful to see such a meaningful partnership aimed at supporting veteran students,” said Dr. Greg Feeney, BCTC President/CEO. “Our commitment to helping them transition back to college reflects the appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Programs like this not only empower veterans with the skills needed for civilian careers but also enrich our communities by integrating their unique experiences and capabilities. This initiative is a great step towards ensuring that they have the resources and opportunities to thrive in the job market. It’s inspiring to witness education and support coming together for such a worthy cause,” said Feeney.
Executive Director Nelson noted that local lodging costs for the 3-week course will be paid by the SC, while those who go on to the BCTC Equine program should have their GI Bill benefits to cover tuition and basic housing. BCTC Workforce Liaison, Remi Bellocq noted that job placement in a variety of paid internships is the norm for over 90% of BCTC Equine graduates.
The first cohort is scheduled to begin this November, with an additional 8 cohort classes in 2025.
