Pastor Joseph Owens, DDLEXINGTON, KY – Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) hosts its 4th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. annual celebration hosted by the African American Student Initiatives office will be led by Dr. Carlous Yates, Associate Vice-President (AVP) for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and Kauai Thurman, Director of African American Student Initiatives (AASI). The theme: Stand Up to Stand Out reflects the life and legacy of the dream of Dr. King. The keynote speaker is the Reverend Joseph L. Owens, D.D. of Shiloh Baptist Church, Lexington, KY.

“We set aside this day to celebrate, honor, educate, and pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Dr. Greg Feeney, President/CEO of BCTC. “Dr. King’s dream offers us inspiration, unity, and hope. This holiday provides an opportunity to reflect, but it also encourages us to continue supporting all students for success,” said Feeney.

“BCTC's celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy provides our faculty, staff, and students with an opportunity to reflect on the past and present while looking ahead to our future,” said Dr. Carlous Yates, AVP for DEIB. “Dr. King’s leadership achieved great progress toward racial equality in America, and we must continue to carry the torch as we lay the brick for the next generation,” said Yates.

“We are excited to hold our annual celebration honoring Dr. King's enduring legacy,” said Kauai Thurman, Director of AASI. “We hope this celebration will inspire our faculty, staff, and students to be a light of unity within our college and community. We hope to foster a space where Dr. King’s dream of all individuals being treated with dignity and respect can come to life,” said Thurman.

The program takes place at the BCTC Leestown Campus, Conference Center, Building C, Room 136 from 11 am to 12:30 pm. To view the celebration virtually, please contact Kauai Thurman at Kauai.thurman@kctcs.edu.
