What is Spotlight Instruction?
The Spotlight Instruction Series (SIS) is a unique opportunity to explore a particular topic with faculty, staff, and peers! Whether it is needing to “brush up” on math skills, exploring resources on campus, learning new study skills, or choosing a major, Spotlight Instruction may have just what you need!
Spotlight Sessions Are:
- Topic-based, active-learning online sessions.
- Led by experienced BCTC faculty and staff.
- Available on a variety of days and times throughout the semester.
- Approved to satisfy Engagement Credit requirements (varies by course & instructor)
- Open to any BCTC student!
What are the Spotlight Topics?
Spotlight offers seven (7) tracks of topics to choose from, depending on what you need and when you need it.
Spotlight Instruction Tracks
- College Success – Introduction to College, Campus Resources, Student Services, Study Skills, Tips & Tricks, Advising, and much more!
- Career Services – Career Exploration, Career Resources, and Career Readiness with the 10 Essential Skills!
- Student Wellness – Personal Counseling Topics, Stress Management, Self-Advocacy, Study Skills, and Self-Care!
- Essential Math for College – Basic Math Topics for All Students, regardless of course!
- Reading & Writing for College – Reading and Writing Workshops for All Students, regardless of course!
- College Algebra – Algebra topics for success in College Algebra and Preparation for Calculus and higher-level science classes.
- Contemporary Math – Course Specific Topics for MA 111U Students
Why Attend a Spotlight Session?
- You choose the topics and sessions to attend!
- Attending Spotlight Instruction often leads to higher grades and better retention.
- Learn a topic from a different instructor. Sometimes a different voice can be helpful to understanding.
- Get a refresher of a math skill or essay writing tip to help with your current course.
- Ask Questions in a safe environment!
- Explore BCTC Services and meet new people!
- Some classes require Engagement Credits or allow Engagement Credits for extra credit. Spotlight Instruction meets course engagement requirements. Check your syllabus or ask your instructor about Engagement Credits & Spotlight Instruction!
How do I Join a Spotlight Session?
Spotlight Sessions are hosted through the Penji App and delivered through Microsoft Teams. Get schedules of sessions and access to Penji through Access Student Success – Spotlight Instruction Sharepoint site (requires login).

Important! Limited Seats Available!
- Sessions are only available online.
- Pre-Registration is Required. Due to the limited number of seats per session, you must register at least one (1) hour prior to the session and cannot miss more than two (2) sessions.
- Registration requires KCTCS Login Credentials through Penji.
Need to Document Spotlight Attendance for Engagement Credits?
Students are responsible for documenting their attendance & participation in Spotlight Instruction Sessions where required by instructors. Check in your syllabus or Blackboard for specific requirements.
